They’ve stopped waiting to be seen…

And have started telling their own stories. 🎥

After completing our Mobile Storytelling course, these nonprofit leaders are now:

Creating.
Filming.
Editing.
Sharing.

And most importantly -
owning it.

Owning their voice.
Owning their stories.
Owning their narratives.

We’re supporting more and more black nonprofit leaders to become mobile storytellers - shifting who gets seen… and who gets supported.

🎥 This is what digital media empowerment looks like.

Of course they did! 🙌🏾

We’ll never stop being proud, happy and in awe at the talent in our communities, and especially of our young people 🥹

The final day of our ‘Mobile Video and Storytelling Course for Young People’ and the teenagers wowed us with their mobile videos.

Just one week ago, their story ideas were just a sentence on a page. Now, they’re videos that we streamed on the TV for their classmates to watch and feedback.

We loved their excitement (and some nervousness), pride and joy to share their stories and achievements - and how supportive they were of each other.

We asked Joshua and Jayla, both 17, how they’ll use their new mobile video skills. Press PLAY to hear what they said.

And, you heard this here first: You might see more of Joshua and Jayla with Our Version Media… Watch this space!

Another empowering session for black nonprofit leaders complete!

In our ‘Mobile Storytelling to Showcase Social Impact’ course, they learned everything from crafting great stories to publishing that finished video.

We caught up with them afterwards to find out what they liked best about the course.

As well as learning practical media skills, they learned how to be seen.
And heard. And about ownership.

Ownership of their stories.
Ownership of their narratives.
Ownership of how others see them.

Now they’ve got the skills to amplify and promote their work and projects, we look forward to seeing more of them!

🎥 This is what digital empowerment looks like.

“What’s my story?”

That’s the question for Day 1 of our Mobile Video and Storytelling course for Young People.

A group of 13 to 17 year olds, each choosing what story they want to share.

Their own real-life stories - told in their own words.

And, from first idea to final edit, we’re guiding them through turning their stories into engaging mobile videos.

Really excited to see what they’ll create!

👉🏾 Follow as we amplify and empower black voices, create confident digital storytellers, and enable communities to reclaim the narratives of stories told about them.

Did you know there’s now a place to find black-led media across the UK?

Black-led media plays a vital role in how our stories, communities and cultures are represented.

Across the UK, black-led platforms inform audiences, celebrate culture, advocate for our communities, hold power to account, and share lived experiences through news, storytelling and community reporting.

Yet it has often been difficult to find these outlets in one place.

Introducing the UK Black-Led Media Directory!

Created by Our Version Media, the directory brings together black-led media platforms from across the country in a single place.

The directory helps people:

• Discover black-led news, culture and community media
• Connect with platforms sharing black stories and perspectives
• Support outlets serving black communities across the UK

Like many, we watched on helplessly as Hurricane Melissa ripped through Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. Our hearts broke as we saw the devastation left behind.

As a Jamaican-led organisation, we’re grateful to everyone who reached out to ask about the safety of our founder’s family on the island. So we’d like to share here what we - and Southampton’s Caribbean Association (SoCA) - are advising Southampton residents who’ve asked how they can support.

To donate money or find out how else you can help Jamaica recover and rebuild, go to the government’s official Support Jamaica website https://supportjamaica.gov.jm

Since the disaster, there has been a rush of fake websites set up to dupe supporters. So, stick to the official site - and, of course, to other reputable disaster response and fundraising organisations.

On the Support Jamaica website, as well as how to donate safely, you’ll also find a list of relief items that the country needs. It’s useful to note that this Needs List is updated as and when necessary.

Got relief items to donate?

📍 The drop-off point is the New Testament Church of God Southampton on Ivy Road

Still unable to contact loved ones?

📞 If you haven’t been able to contact loved ones, you can report missing people using Support Jamaica’s website.
