The Tree Planter

The Tree Planter Hey I'm Dan - I am OblongTrees, I work with volunteers to plant trees in the UK this is my tree diary I've been running OblongTrees since 2018.

I do pretty much everything for OblongTrees from welcoming new customers, managing social media, designing the website, creating the systems to keep track of the trees, organising volunteers, clearing land, managing our international planters through to planting trees. I currently give up my time for free so that we can plant as many trees as possible. We plant & maintain trees in the UK for £4.50

each, we can only achieve this if people volunteer their time (thank you to my brilliant volunteer team). I was at an exhibition recently, talking about what I do, so many people shook my hand and told me to keep up the good work. My work was so well received that I've decided to share this diary, perhaps a few tree planting adventures in peoples facebook feeds might be well received, I guess we'll see...

25-Mar-26 At the weekend I visited a previous planting site. This was one of my first tree planting sites. We lost a few but generally the trees are doing very well, some are over 5m high now. It's always nice to be able to go back and visit, I don't always get the chance.

24-Mar-26 I've been out planting again, this time a solo mission. I planted just over 100 trees, filling out an area we started planting earlier this year.

31-Jan-26 I was back out planting again, joined by some volunteers and in particular Charlotte from Flights For Their Future we're looking at ways we can work together and grow what we do. We've finally now used the last of the cardboard type guards, we'll not use them again, they are easily ripped apart and don't last the duration - we're switching back to biodegradable (no plastic) spirals. We were lucky, it started raining just as we left. Thanks to everyone who makes this possible.

17-Jan-26 Today I was joined by 6 volunteers - thanks all. Together we planted 300 trees near Banbury and made lots of holes for more. Fortunately the field had drained well after the recent rain, so it wasn't too muddy at all, a nice pleasant day for January. We'll be back here to plant more soon...

16-Jan-26... I'm back, the world got in the way for a while. Today Charlotte one of my volunteers and I headed over close to Banbury, we dropped off and set up for a bigger planting day on Saturday. We made some holes and marked them with canes.

Well, life has been hell on earth for the last few years, I've been drowning in sh*te. I started tree planting because I was comfortable and felt I was in a place I could give back to the world. At one stage I was planting over 5,000 trees a Winter with help from a growing force of volunteers. However, in 2024 my world turned completely upside down. This all had a negative impact on tree planting and also the raising of funds, I had to take a step back. Last Winter I still planted several thousand trees, but I didn't post here often about it. This year, I've just started planting - late to the season I know, but better late than never. Last week as I was waiting to pick up a volunteer, I spotted this (pictured). I believe it must be worlds shortest fence.

13/04/25 Today I was back at Puddleducks Cafe, Southam. The previous planting season I planted two single rows of hedge plants, either side of the drive. Today with the help of volunteers I planted 300-400 more (thanks Charlotte, Ben & co). We're doubling up the hedge on each side of the drive, so each side of the drive will have 2 staggered rows of plants.

12/04/25 Today I visited Puddleducks Cafe and Gallery near Southam. The previous planting season I'd planted ~1,650 trees around the perimeter of the one their fields, today I replaced plants the didn't make it. I had the help of Jem one of my volunteers (thanks Jem) and between us we must have re-planted 80-90 trees.

11/04/25 Today I planted another 60 trees just outside of Kineton, finishing this site off. I would have to check my spreadsheets for the exact numbers, but it must be over 600 planted here in total this Winter. Excellent, we're getting there, the sooner I finish planting for the season the better. I just hope we get some rain soon.

10/04/25 I was out planting in Kineton again. One of my volunteers helped, thanks Charlotte, between us we manage to plant 60 trees. That's 195 planted at this site so far this week, it's slow going because the ground is full of stones making it very difficult to dig.

09/04/25 The last couple of days I've been planting in Kineton. Yesterday I was joined by Jem one of my regular volunteers (thanks Jem), Today I flew a solo mission. In total we've planted 135 trees along this embankment. It's not fun in the heat, the stones in the ground are a pain, it's slow going. Fortunately I was able to give some of the trees a drink today using water from the nearby river. I estimate it'll take another 2-3 days to finish up here...
