Whole Team Training

The end of the month full day training was a medley of training activities based near Torrington. A big thank you to the owners of Week Farm for allowing the team to fly our drones over the fields, practice 4x4 driving on the forestry tracks, and use the woods for search dog demonstrations.

There were also Blue light driving sessions, search party leader and rope scenarios for team members and trainees to get their teeth into. Thank you to Search Dog Jack and Goo who came across from North Dartmoor Search and Rescue to do the Search Dog sessions and Supporter Matt for doing a show and tell of the new Search Manager logging tool he is developing for the team. A really productive day for all.

Call-out 13: 5-6-26, Norton sub Hamdon, All day

ESRT were tasked by Avon and Somerset Police at 9am to assist them in a search for an elderly lady with dementia, visiting Norton sub Hamdon, near Yeovil, who had subsequently gone missing.

10 team members from ESRT were joined by search dog Goo, search dog Nat from North Dartmoor Search and Rescue and 7 members of Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue Team to carry out extensive searches of the woods, farmland and hedges around the village.

Thankfully, ESRT found the lady at 15.20 and the team's Paramedic treated her before handing her over to South West Ambulance Trust for onward care. We wish her all the best.

This week is volunteers week and we’d like to say thank you to all our volunteers.

Those hill going team members, all our support team members, the friends and families who put up with us going off at all sorts of unsociable hours, as well as all those fabulous members of our community who raise funds to keep this completely voluntary team going.

Happy Volunteers week one and all.

Trainee Navigation assessments

All members of Exmoor Search and Rescue should know where we are and how to get to somewhere all of the time. This means our navigation skills need to be second to none, both using map and compass and/ or using digital mapping. Both have their place.

Three of our current trainee cohort were put through their paces on their navigation assessments this week. Well done all on a nice hot day on the moor.

Whole team Search training

Continuing the month's focus on Search and Control, this evening’s training was putting the theory from the indoor into practice. Teams were tasked to set up the control vehicle upon arrival (radios, computers aerial etc), while others planned where they would do initial checks for various scenarios.

Medical section training

The section were looking at head and spinal trauma injuries in this month's session. Knowledge was checked and more practice with the vacuum mattress was in order.

We spent time looking at how spinal immobilisation works with casualty warming to make sure that our options were viable. Some practical scenario work tested knowledge and skills in full and low lighting and we were joined by a trainee who was in at the deep end all evening but did a magnificent job supporting the RRMTs.
