Fiona Duncan, the Independent Strategic Advisor – the promise, is visiting all 32 local authorities across Scotland, to hear from children, young people, families, and care experienced adults, alongside those working to support them, about progress to keep the promise.

Today, Fiona is visiting Aberdeenshire Council to learn more about the change happening in their local area and the challenges still getting in the way of further progress.

We're thrilled to be partnering with The Scottish Parliament for a free panel discussion on 17 August as part of the Festival of Politics 2026, to explore the testimony of Scotland's care experienced community.

Taking part in the panel will be:

Nicola McCartney, playwright and lead artist on the Caring Scotland project

Gemma Smith, a trans-racial adoptee and subject of the Ten Portraits exhibition who works with the National Leadership Network and the care sector

Fiona Duncan, Independent Strategic Advisor - the promise and Chair of The Promise Scotland

Scott Kyle, award-winning actor, narrator of One Hundred Voices

The event will be chaired by Katherine Sangster MSP, Deputy Convener of the Education and Gaelic Committee.

Unheard Voices, Unbroken Spirits is a powerful musical written, produced, and performed by a group of care experienced young people from the 'Voices of the Promise' project in West Dunbartonshire. It follows a group of friends grappling with love, loss, and identity

The show is now in full swing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival but it's not too late to get your tickets.

Fiona Duncan, Independent Strategic Advisor - the promise, is joining the panel of the Caring Scotland? event at this year's The Scottish Parliament Festival of Politics on 17 August.

Alongside the One Hundred Voices installation by National Theatre of Scotland, the event will explore how far Scotland has come in keeping the promise and the barriers to change that are still getting in the way of ensuring every child, young person, and care experienced adult have what they need to thrive.

The Holding Differently, Containing Distress research project is seeking to understand and address the use of physical restraint in residential children's care in Scotland.

The Scottish Physical Restrain Action Group (SPRAG) are collaborating on the project and are currently looking for residential care workers across Scotland to be Project Champions to raise awareness about the research so that it reaches as many members of the workforce as possible. The Promise Design School helps you find solutions to challenges around keeping the promise.

Through September and October, The Promise Scotland are running a four-part Design School Lite course, to introduce you to service design and co-design principles.

It has co-design at its heart, which allows a wide range of people to contribute meaningfully to solving problems and make sure that solutions to problems meet the needs of those involved.
