We’re in Kirkintilloch today for Creating Hope with Peer Support.

Peer supporters, workers and people with lived experience are coming together to share experiences, swap ideas and explore what peer support can look like for people affected by su***de.

We’ll be getting stuck into the Creating Hope with Peer Support Pathway, with plenty of time for discussion, reflection and learning from each other along the way.

Today, we’re bringing together peer workers and people looking to step into peer support roles in Edinburgh for Peer2Peer training.

The session is exploring the history of peer support, what makes peer support unique and building skills for facilitating peer groups.

Our brand new Peer2Peer toolbox launches next week, bringing together practical learning and resources to support peer practice.

If we choose it, Scotland can make recovery the way our mental health system works, not the alternative to it.

This is the future we're working towards in Catalysts for Change, our 10-year strategic plan.

Over the coming years, our contribution will focus on four things:
• Making lived experience peer leadership central to recovery
• Building a peer workforce people can see throughout their recovery journey
• Backing the innovation, collaboration and momentum of our partners
• Adapting to the changing picture of mental health in Scotland

Change is possible. And we all have a part to play in creating the conditions for recovery to thrive.

"She is no longer looking for NHS help - she’s lost faith in the services that she believes let her loved ones down so badly."

That is far from atypical, says Natalie: “The people here have tried to access services for our loved ones before they died. And then after they die we try to access services for ourselves.”

Too often, she says, they have been let down. “We’ve had to rely on each other. Peer support doesn’t replace statutory services but it provides something different. Everyone should have the option to access both.”

Those bereaved by su***de have a 65 per cent increased risk of taking their own lives. So why is there not more funding for support after tragedy strikes?
