BUS FROM HASWELL TO SHOTTON PRIMARY SCHOOL: The Parish Council has received a copy of the official reply [2nd June 2026] from the Head of Education and Skills at Durham County Council: "The decision to withdraw the maintained concessionary scheme was agreed by Cabinet on 11th February 2026. The Council has recently written to families who may be affected by this change to make them aware, this affects those currently paying for a concessionary seat on the Haswell to Shotton route. At present, the scheme enables parents and carers of children who are not eligible for free home-to-school transport to purchase a seat on a vehicle that is already transporting pupils who are eligible. This has involved the Council arranging vehicles with additional capacity to accommodate both entitled and non-entitled pupils. From September 2026, the Council will focus solely on meeting its statutory duty to provide transport for children who are entitled to free travel. As a result, vehicles will no longer be arranged with additional capacity for children who are not eligible under the statutory criteria. Parents and carers of these children will therefore need to make their own arrangements for travel to and from school from that date. In relation to families living in Haswell, the nearest suitable school is either Ludworth Primary or South Hetton Primary (dependant on the home address location within the village). Where a parent chooses a school that is not the nearest suitable school, the Council is not required to provide free transport. As Shotton Primary is not the nearest suitable school for Haswell, free travel cannot be provided in these circumstances".

VACANCY: The Parish Council at the next meeting in June will be considering applications to fill a vacancy for Haswell Plough parish ward by co-option. If you can work as part of a team, if you are able to take part in meetings, form sound judgements based on what is best for your community, and you are willing to abide by majority decisions, then you have the qualities of a parish councillor. You do not need to live within Haswell Plough but you are required to live within the Haswell parish area or within three miles of it. This role is unpaid. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of our control, this Saturday’s Roller Disco has been cancelled.

✨ TEMPLE SPA WELLNESS SESSION ✨

Hosted by Joanne Hilton

We’re excited to be hosting a relaxing wellness session with TempleSpa, led by consultant Joanne Hilton.

This session will focus on wellness, relaxation, and self-care using beautiful TempleSpa products — and best of all, the first two sessions are completely FREE!

After the first two free sessions, there will be a charge of £6 per person, per session.
