Honouring Alison McNamara
It is with deep sadness, and immense gratitude, that we honour the life and legacy of Alison McNamara, our lead for Oshay’s Brain Domains in Northern Ireland.
Alison was a fierce advocate, a devoted mother, and a woman who poured her heart and soul into FASD awareness. Alison lived with significant health challenges, but her heart was huge and her voice even bigger. She used to say I had the brains and she was the ‘gubbee scout’ — the one who never took no for an answer… and always got what she wanted in the end. She believed relentlessly in change, in justice, and in doing right by children and families.
Alison often said she would “knock the doors of Stormont until her knuckles bled” to make sure FASD was understood, recognised, and acted upon. That wasn’t a saying — it was how she lived. She challenged systems, pushed for awareness, and refused to let Northern Ireland be overlooked.
Before joining Oshay’s Brain Domains, Alison led FASD Awareness NI. She came to us with clarity and intention — wanting Northern Ireland to remain visible, connected, and supported long into the future. She wanted her work to continue. She wanted her voice to live on.
Above all, Alison adored her children. Everything she did was for her boys and her family. She was deeply loved and supported by Brian, whose care and devotion meant the world to her. Together, they showed what strength, love, and commitment truly look like.
Every future Oshay’s Brain Domains Northern Ireland conference will be held in Alison’s memory — a lasting tribute to the woman who made them possible.
Her work mattered.
Her voice matters still.
And her legacy will continue.
With love and respect,
All of us at Oshay’s Brain Domains
