From being dumped in a bin… to living her best life in Wales

Back in October 2026, a litter of tiny, week-old puppies came into Birmingham Dogs Home after being found dumped in a bin.

At just a week old, they were completely helpless and needed round-the-clock care. Our incredible staff stepped in and hand-reared them, giving them the love, warmth and care they needed to survive and grow.

Thankfully, every one of those little puppies went on to find a loving home.

One of them was known as Shakira while she was with us. She went all the way to Wales to live with my friend, where she is now called Luma.

I've been lucky enough to spend a few days with Luma while having a little break myself, and seeing the dog she has grown into has been incredibly special. She is such an amazing, happy and loved dog, and looking at her now, it's hard to believe how her life began.

I dread to think what could have happened to Luma and her siblings if Birmingham Dogs Home hadn't been there to take them in that day.

Stories like Luma's are exactly why we do what we do. Behind every dog that comes through our doors is a life worth saving and a chance for a completely different future.

If Luma's story has made an impact on you and you would like to help us continue being there for homeless and abandoned dogs just like her, whether through fundraising, donating or supporting us in another way, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Every bit of support helps us give more dogs the second chance they deserve.

It's not often I share our own training journey, but tonight felt like one worth celebrating.
A little bit of loose lead walking training with Twister this evening.

It's been a long road to get to this point, and we still have an even longer road ahead, but every single step forward is a huge achievement. Rescue dogs don't all arrive with confidence. Many carry the weight of their past with them, and it's our job to help them learn that the world isn't such a scary place.

Tonight, we visited a local field that Twister had never been to before. With so many new sights, sounds, smells and distractions, I wasn't expecting him to concentrate at all. Instead, he absolutely amazed me. He stayed focused, listened beautifully, and showed just how far he has come. I couldn't be prouder of him.

Moments like these remind me why I do what I do. Seeing a dog slowly begin to trust, relax, and enjoy life again is the greatest reward. Progress isn't always measured in giant leaps, sometimes it's simply a calm walk in a brand-new place.

To anyone working with a nervous or reactive rescue dog, don't give up. Celebrate the small wins, be patient, and let them go at their own pace. They really are worth every second.
I'm so proud of you, Twister. ❤️

A huge thank you to one of our amazing supporters who very kindly donated a fantastic raffle prize, along with a wonderful selection of tombola items, to help us raise vital funds for Birmingham Dogs Home.

The generosity of our supporters never fails to amaze me. Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps us continue caring for the 2,000 homeless dogs that come through our doors each year.

Your kindness will help us raise even more money at our upcoming events, giving our dogs the care, love and second chance they deserve.

From all of us at Birmingham Dogs Home, and from the dogs whose lives you are helping to change, thank you so much for your incredible support. It truly means the world to us.

Raise a Glass for Homeless Dogs!

Looking for a fun way to get friends and family together while making a real difference?

Why not host your own Wine Tasting Evening in aid of Birmingham Dogs Home! Simply ask everyone to bring along a bottle of wine to share and enjoy, then invite your guests to make a donation instead of paying for drinks.

It's a relaxed, affordable way to have a fantastic evening while helping homeless dogs.

Every penny you raise helps us continue caring for around 2,000 homeless dogs every year, giving them the love, care and second chance they deserve.

Whether it's a few friends around the kitchen table or a larger gathering, your support can change lives.

If you'd like to organise a Wine Tasting Evening or would like some fundraising advice, I'd love to hear from you.
