Among the many curiosities in the Snodland Millennium Museum lies two dusty, worn documents. Now many might glance with interest and daunted by the volume of text move swiftly on, but those that lingered can make a very beneficial discovery . For one of these documents is the will of Edward Goddin from 1661. In his will he left a field in Ivy Church, Romney Marsh to a trust. The rent of that field would be used to pay for a poor child from the parish of Snodland 'to be Apprentice to some honest trade and calling.' For those still reading, here is where you are rewarded. Three hundred and sixty five years later, the Godden Charity still exists and whilst the rules have been somewhat relaxed to accommodate changing times, applications for this grant are still being accepted. As it stands, for young adults, who were born in the parish of Snodland (Or Birling) (Or have lived here over 3 years) aged 16-21, who are leaving education to pursue an apprenticeship or honest trade, you might be eligible to receive this grant. Grant awards are typically several hundred pounds to assist with the purchase of tooling, equipment, books or even a computer.

Could you, a family member or a friend be eligible? If you believe you might, please email Mr Jeremy Hayes - [email protected].

On Tuesday 19th of May, our societies chairman Matt Johnson was delighted to welcome Kent Councillors Foster, Sian and Dibben on a visit to the Snodland Millennium Museum. They discussed the incredible contribution that the museum and society has provided to the community since its opening in 1999. After 26 years, the museum is due for an upgrade and new lease of life, so potential grants and funding opportunities were discussed. The participation in the Wheels of Time scheme has seen many children visiting to collect their badge, whilst our website and archives have never been busier with people researching their genealogy and family history in the town. The future of the society and museum is full of potential. With thanks to Snodland Town Councillor Sam Large for the photos.

Have you ever wondered, how does the Snodland Clock Tower keep time, chime so melodiously and now even provide a themed light display? Well wonder no longer, for all your horological questions shall be answered. The Snodland Clock tower was built as a memorial to Charles Townsend Hook in 1878. To keep good time, it needs to be wound twice a week, performed by members or employees of the Town Council. Its mechanism was manufactured by T Cooke & Sons, utilising a mechanical weight and cable mechanism. The striking bell weighs 4cwt or approx 203 kg and the clock has four 6ft dials. A more recent addition is the LED lighting on each dial face which can now be themed in accordance with different celebrations, memorials or events.

So on the hour, remember those who diligently climb the ladders every week, defying their fear of heights, to keep the clock ticking and the bell chiming.

One family that has a long history as grocers in Snodland is the Carter's, otherwise known as A'n'D's. They have been at the heart of our high street at number 38 for over thirteen years now. The row of shops was built in 1890 and No38 originally was a tobacconist and confectioner run by Thomas Charles Lucas. At the 2026 Annual Town Council, Adam and Dave Carter were awarded the community service award for the long history of support their family has given to the community. Over the years their generosity has funded many charitable endeavours and supported the new Snodland Hub. The Carter family ran the off-licence on Constitution Hill until 1988. In 2003 they opened a shop on the Holborough Road for ten years, until their move to 38 High Street in 2013.
Consider showing your support, pop in and see what they have on offer!

We are grateful to Adam Taylor joining us for our final talk of this season. It was fascinating to hear the history of the Medway Muddies and how these three groups literally changed the geography of the Medway estuary and even altered the tides. Who knew mud was so valuable?!
We are now on our annual hiatus until October, but our work will continue at the Snodland Millennium Museum. If you'd like to get involved with the society, please send us a message!

Good news, everyone! Thanks to your support and generosity we have reached our funding target for the restoration of Thomas Waghorn's gravestone. Our fundraiser combined with the generous donation from Waghorn's descendent in Australia has raised a total of £1358.38. We have applied to the Diocese of Rochester for approval and a public notice has been put up. We are hoping that the scaffolding around the church will be removed by the end of May as scheduled and the restoration work can begin in June.
Thank you to everyone who donated and shared our campaign. We will look forward to sharing the end result.

We are very fortunate to have the new Collards Veg shop on Holborough Road. It really adds great aesthetics and convenience to the area. It looks like a few more shops might be joining the road soon as well. Here's how it looked a century ago!
