World Horse Welfare

World Horse Welfare Inspiring people to put the horse at the centre of how they think, care and act for almost a century.

In the United Kingdom, we have four Rescue and Rehoming Centres and a network of full-time welfare Field Officers. Overseas, we provide communities with the skills and training to care for their working horses and so improve their livelihoods. We also deliver high-profile and effective international campaigns to promote the welfare of horses. We support the responsible use of horses in sport, bein

g the welfare arm of the FEI and an advisor to the British Horseracing Authority. Please note we cannot process reports about horses in distress via social media - if you are concerned for the welfare of a horse you can find out how to report a situation to us by visiting www.worldhorsewelfare.org/report.

Meet Rover ๐Ÿ’”

Rover was one of the Trafficked 20, a group of horses rescued at Dover Port after they were found being smuggled out of the country. Scared, exhausted and facing an uncertain future, Roverโ€™s story is just one example of a much wider horse welfare issue.

But this isnโ€™t where his story endsโ€ฆ

Follow along for Part 2 to see how Rover is getting on now.

Weโ€™ve also got something very special to share! ๐ŸŽ‰ Schleich have kindly donated a number of limited-edition World Horse Welfare horse figurines for us to give away and one of them looks so much like Rover that we couldnโ€™t resist making him the star of this post!

A lifelong love of horses led Gemma Owen to rehome Bert ๐Ÿ’™

Having owned horses since childhood, Gemma knew she wanted to give a horse in need a second chance. When Bert arrived at his new home, he quickly won over both his new friends, horses and humans alike!

Today, Bert is thriving alongside his field companion Jigsaw and enjoying the loving home he deserves.

There are so many horses and ponies looking for homes, including those who make wonderful companions. Rehoming can be a rewarding way to give a horse a second chance whilst making a real difference to their future.

Itโ€™s Horse of the Week time! Everyone meet Paprika! ๐Ÿด

Paprika is a lovely 12.2hh gelding who is looking for a loving new home.

Paprika is a lovely, fun gelding now looking for his first new home as a companion. Paprika came into the centre as part of a mixed group from Geligear common in South Wales. On arrival at the centre, he was unhandled and has since come on leaps and bounds with his training, proving to be a quick learner and he is now good with all his basic skills. Paprika is looking for a rehomer who would enjoy his interactive and enthusiastic nature as he enjoys playing and socialising with his horse friends.

Do you struggle with managing your horseโ€™s weight? ๐ŸŒฑ

Many horse owners face challenges at this time of year, particularly when it comes to managing grass intake and reducing the risk of laminitis.

The key recommendations for preventing and managing laminitis include restricting grazing or, in some cases, removing access to grass altogether. However, as horses are designed to trickle feed for around 20 hours a day, itโ€™s important that they still have access to suitable forage, such as soaked or low-sugar hay or haylage.

One option that can help support weight management is a track system. Designed to encourage natural movement and behaviours, track systems allow horses to live more as they would in the wild while helping to manage their grazing.

Take our laminitis quiz and test your knowledge ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://bit.ly/4evuZQZ

What does good training look like for horses in sport? ๐ŸŽ

More than 150 horse sport leaders from across four continents recently came together to discuss the results of our 5th annual YouGov poll on public perceptions of the involvement of horses in sport at an event supported by Agria Equine Insurance.

The poll found that 7 in 10 people believe that horse wellbeing should always take priority, regardless of the effect on performance, and around half either have concerns or do not trust that horses involved in sport are trained in ways they believe are acceptable.

Discussions throughout the event highlighted the importance of continual learning, transparency and using the latest evidence to help improve welfare outcomes for horses.

Itโ€™s Horse of the Week time! Everyone meet Chere! ๐Ÿด

Chere is a lovely 14.1hh mare who is looking for a loving new home.

Chere is a sweet mare looking for her second chance in life. When Chere arrived, she was rather unsettled and did not like it if she was taken away from her friends, so would not always catch for her groom. Now a lot more settled, she will happily come in for a pamper and some cuddles, and only occasionally need the temptations of a sweet treat to catch. She is good for our farrier but can be slightly wary of the vet, due to this and the fact she can be a little unsettled in new environments, she will need a competent handler.

๐Ÿ“Œ Chere is based at World Horse Welfare Belwade Farm, Aberdeenshire

Can you offer this lovely girl a home? Find out more and apply ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://bit.ly/4wVAvnd
