🌍 World Social Work Day

This year’s theme of “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society” is all about coming together.

✨ Co-building means working with people, not just for them, but through partnership, listening, and shared solutions.

✨ Hope reminds us that change is always possible.

✨ Harmony reflects our commitment to understanding, inclusion, and stronger communities.

And Harambee? It’s a Swahili word meaning “pulling together.” It represents unity, collective effort, and communities supporting one another to achieve something bigger than any one person could alone 🤝

For social work, this theme captures what we do every day, bringing children, carers, families, and communities together to bridge divides and build brighter, more inclusive futures.

Because when we pull together, we move forward together 💫

17/03/2026

St. Patrick’s Day is more than parades and wearing green, at its core, it’s about belonging, community, and new beginnings. And those ideas connect closely to fostering.

Here’s how the meaning of the day links in a deeper way:

☘️ Belonging & Identity
St. Patrick’s Day celebrates identity and feeling part of something bigger.
👉 In fostering, children are often searching for that same sense of belonging, a place where they feel accepted and safe to be themselves.

🤝 Community & Support
The day brings people together, friends, families, neighbours.
👉 Foster carers become part of a child’s support system, one big fostering family showing them they’re not alone and that people care.

🌱 New Beginnings
Springtime, growth, fresh starts, it’s a huge theme of the day.
👉 Fostering offers children a chance to start again, rebuild trust, and grow in a stable environment.

💚 Kindness & Care
There’s a strong spirit of generosity and looking out for others.
👉 That’s exactly what fostering is, opening your home and heart to support a child when they need it most.

So, while St. Patrick’s Day is often seen as a celebration of luck, fostering reminds us that real change doesn’t come from luck, it comes from people choosing to care 💚

❌ Myth: I need professional childcare experience to foster.

✅ Reality: You don’t need formal childcare qualifications, your life experience matters just as much.

Many people believe you need to be a teacher, social worker, or have years of professional childcare experience to become a foster carer. In reality, that’s not the case.

Skills you’ve gained through everyday life, like parenting, supporting family members, mentoring, or simply being a caring and reliable adult, are incredibly valuable. Qualities like patience, empathy, and a willingness to listen can make a real difference to a child or young person.

As a fostering service, we provide a comprehensive Skills to Foster training programme before you start, alongside ongoing support to help you build the skills and confidence you need.

You won’t be expected to know everything from day one, you’ll learn and grow along the way.
What matters most is your commitment to providing a safe, stable, and nurturing home.

❌ Myth: I have to be perfect to be a foster carer.

✅ Reality: You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to be committed, caring, and willing to learn.

Foster carers come from all walks of life, and none of them are perfect. What matters most is your ability to provide a safe, stable, and supportive home where a child or young person can feel valued and understood.

Children in care don’t need perfection, they need patience, consistency, and someone who will stick by them through ups and downs.

As a foster carer, you’ll receive training, guidance, and ongoing support to help you grow in the role, because fostering is a journey, not something you’re expected to get “right” all the time.

Making mistakes, asking questions, and learning as you go are all part of being a great foster carer.

❌ Myth: I can’t afford to foster.

✅ Reality: Foster carers receive financial support to help cover the costs of caring for a child.

Fostering isn’t something you’re expected to fund on your own. Foster carers receive a weekly fostering allowance designed to cover everyday expenses like food, clothing, activities, and household costs for the child or young person in their care.

As a fostering service, we also provide training, ongoing support, and additional payments depending on the type of care you provide. The aim is to ensure that finances aren’t a barrier to giving a child a safe and supportive home.

People from many different financial backgrounds foster successfully. What matters most is your commitment, stability, and willingness to support a child or young person, not your income.

Thank you to Special Voices for inviting us to your Information Day at Cippenham Baptist Church 💙

It was fantastic to have a fostering stall and speak with so many parents, carers, professionals and community members who attended to learn more about the services and support available across Slough.

Events like this are such a great opportunity to connect, share information and support families of children and young people with SEND. We loved meeting so many of you and having some really positive conversations about fostering and the different ways we can support local families.

Thank you again to Special Voices for hosting such a welcoming and informative event!

Mothering Sunday (also known as Mother’s Day) 💐 can be an emotional time for children looked after.

For some, it may highlight feelings about being away from their birth families, while others may wish to celebrate the important mother figures in their lives ❤️

Every child experiences the day differently. A little understanding, kindness and support from foster carers can make all the difference 🤝

What matters most is helping every child feel loved, valued and part of the family. 🏡✨

Myth ❌: You have to own your own home to become a foster carer.

Reality ✅: You don’t need to own your home to foster.

People who rent, live in social housing, or own their home can all become foster carers. What matters most is that you have a stable home environment and a spare bedroom for a child or young person.

Fostering is about the care, support, and stability you can provide, not whether you have a mortgage or a tenancy agreement. Many amazing foster carers rent their homes and still provide safe, nurturing spaces where children can thrive.

❌Myth: You’re too young or too old to foster.

✅Reality: Fostering is about your ability to provide a safe, supportive home. You can foster from the age of 21yrs old and there is no upper age limit.

There isn’t a “perfect” age to become a foster carer. What matters most is your life experience, patience, stability, and willingness to support a child or young person. Foster carers come from many different age groups and backgrounds, and each brings valuable strengths to the role.

Some younger carers bring energy and flexibility, while older carers often bring a wealth of life experience and stability. What matters is your ability to provide care, understanding, and a safe place for a child to grow.

Myth: Foster carers don’t get to choose who they foster.

Reality: Foster carers absolutely have a say.

Before any child is placed, foster carers talk through things like age range, number of children, needs they feel confident supporting, and what will work best for their household. The goal is always to make the right match for both the child and the carer.

Fostering isn’t about saying yes to every placement, it’s about creating safe, stable homes where children and young people can thrive. And that starts with making thoughtful, informed choices together.

Today is Young Carers Action Day 💙

Across the UK, thousands of young people quietly take on caring roles for someone in their family, helping with daily tasks, offering emotional support, and balancing it all alongside school, friendships, and growing up.

Today we recognise their strength, resilience, and compassion. Young carers show us every day what kindness and responsibility look like.

If you are a young carer, please remember: you are not alone, and your role matters. Your voice deserves to be heard and supported.

We are proud to support .trust and the amazing work they do to champion and support young carers across the country.

Let’s take a moment today to raise awareness, show appreciation, and make sure young carers get the recognition and support they deserve.

🌸 International Women’s Day Celebration 🌸

We were proud to celebrate the incredible women in our community this International Women’s Day 💚

To mark the occasion, we hosted a special pampering session for our amazing carers, recognising the dedication, strength and compassion they show every single day.

A huge thank you to Slough & Langley College where talented beauty students provided relaxing facials, massages and hairstyling, giving carers a well-deserved opportunity to unwind and feel appreciated ✨

💬 “It was such a lovely experience. It made me feel valued and reminded me how important it is to take time for myself.” - Carer

This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” reminds us that when we support, uplift and invest in one another, we all grow stronger. It’s about recognising the power of generosity, collaboration and community. From carers and professionals to mothers, daughters, sisters and friends, your strength and commitment inspire us all 🌍💐

Thank you to everyone who helped create such a warm and welcoming space for our carers to relax, recharge and feel celebrated 🙏
