This morning our volunteers (Dawn and Pete) swept the sea shells from the pathway between concord beach and Fisherman’s Corner. They had come up because of recent high tides combined with high winds. Before anyone starts to blame the gentler revetment they are much easier to sweep than the piles of sand we used to get!
Other volunteers (Steve and Matt) gave the benches a second coat of waterproof wood stain that dried quickly in the morning sun.
We noted that bollards have now been installed by Balfour Beatty at the bottom of our ramp to deter motorists from parking on it.

We have had to give up our residency of the Hut but still managed to meet this morning as usual. Ken was out early litter picking: Les was out dead heading roses and weeding the raised flower bed ; Matt, Pete, Steve and Dawn were finishing off the painting of the black legs on the benches.
I am pleased to report that all the benches have now been done and the seafront is looking great again as seen in the photo.
We ended with a coffee in Jimmy Macs.

This is a great picture of Stuart and Jamie. They were given the day off to work in the community and chose to help me with the refurbishment of the benches at Concord Beach. They have been painting the legs black to complete the refurbishment of the benches. Our grateful thanks to EQUANS for sending us these two hardworking men.

On Thursday I completed the sanding down of the wooden benches on Concord Beach. They have been given a new coat of a waterproof mahogany stain and will soon have their legs painted black. This has been a large and expensive undertaking and we thank all who made donations to the costs. Many have said how much better Concord Beach is looking.

When the path to Concord Beach was first put in it was not user friendly. I went bto see Lee of Balfour Beatty and, as usual, he was very sympathetic and agreed to modify the path in accordance with their brief to return the seawall to its original status before the work began. The modifications are now complete and the path is now open; as well as the upper and lower paths along the seawall.
I have always had a good working relationship with Balfour Beatty and have to say how pleased I am with the care taken over our murals and benches. There has been a few issues over the resiting of benches due to modifications to the wall but they have always been resolved in a satisfactory manner.
We now have a great walkway at the top of the wall and at the sea side. More importantly our seawall is now safer to protect us from flooding.
The new gentler slope down to the water is proving popular and as nature recovers will blend in to our seaside,

Thepicket fencing is only temporary to let the disturbed earth settle down and allow the grass and wild flowers to root.

I know not everyone is impressed with the work but I ask if you cannot say "thank-you" please do not leave a negative comment.

PS We will now get on with refurbishing the rest of the benches!

Some years ago volunteers from Friends of Concord Beach applied to the Environment Agency for permission to tarmac the gravel path up the wall to Concord Beach. This was to give easier access for wheelchairs, buggies and mobility scooters. We were helped in the venture by Dean the Digger and local men (Sniper and Gerry, now sadly deceased). They had the experience to do do the work.
The repair work to the wall is almost ended and one of the last pieces of work has been the reinstatement of our path. It is the only path to be tarmaced thanks to the earlier efforts of FoCB. Balfour Beatty have made a more gentle slope to make it easier to ascend to the top of the wall.

We are pleased to say that the shower on Concord Beach is again operational. We have replaced the control valve. Sorry that it was off line for the past few weeks but the stop c**k was anobtainable due to the works on the seawall.
If you would like to assist us with the costs please drop a few pennies in our collecting tin on the cafe counter. Thank you, Colin

This morning we cut the grass and repositioned the "sandcastles" by the retaining wall at the base of the seawall at the entrance ro Concord Beach.
The "sandcastles" are small concrete bollards to deter inconsiderate drivers from parking here because: the verge is not wide enough for a car: it is at the start of a blind double bend and there are double white lines with cross hatching in the middle of the road.
Even Blue Badge holders are forbidden to park here.
We would remind drivers that there is a carpark opposite and you can park for free in the side streets off Eastern Esplanade.
Please park sensinbly and keep other road users and pedestrians crossing here safe.

We have been working hard refurbishing the mahogany benches on Concord Beach. The benches have not been attended to for several years [been in storage by Environment Agency}. We have used this opportunity to use a different coating as the yacht varnish has not stood the test of time. WE have sanded the benches back to bare wood and then coated with a waterproof mahogany stain and we are quite pleased with the result.
It takes approximately 5 volunteer hours to do each bench at a cost of £13.00 per bench.
Last Wednesday we were delighted to have the help of the staff from the Nationwide Building Society [Rayleigh Branch]
Georgia, Ellie Mae, Katy, Kat and James did an amazing job painting bench legs black. They helped us complete the 31 benches available so far after the EA work. A massive thankyou to them all.
As the remaining 25 benches become available we will refurbish them as well but could do with some help for our funds.
