Sunday Species Spotlight: Great Egret (Ardea alba)

As the name suggests, the great egret, also known as great white egret, is a large white bird often found in wetland habitats. They stand in shallow water waiting for fish, amphibians and insects to pass by then spear them with their long pointed bill.

How do you identify egrets?
Great egrets are similar to our 2 other resident egrets but in the UK, all of our egrets are white so it can be a bit harder to tell them apart. However, great egrets are our largest egret at over 3ft tall and a similar size to a grey heron, with long black legs and a long yellow bill, but if in breeding plumage - this yellow beak can turn black.

Little egrets are just over half the size of great egrets, so this is a great place to start! Little egrets have a black bill and long black legs as well but they have bright yellow feet. They are also found on waterbodies but actively hunt for prey in shallow water.

Cattle egrets, unlike the other two egrets, are not as reliant on waterbodies but instead favour areas with grazing animals, taking advantage of the insects that are disturbed by them. Cattle egrets are also slightly smaller than a little egret, with yellow legs, but if in breeding plumage they develop rusty orange feathers on their head, breast and back, which contrasts with the all white plumage of the great and little egret.

Shorebird Sanctuary Update.

So after what felt like a fairly slow start things have certainly got busy over the last two weeks.
We now have a total of 34 nests, spread pretty evenly across our three protected species - Little Terns, Ringed Plovers and Oystercatchers.

Obviously its still very early days and nature is bound to throw many risks and challenges our way but its lovely to experience such a strong start to the season.

The images below are of a very acrobatic Little Tern, three of the nests we have found in the last few days and finally a quick 'just for fun' challenge. Can you locate the nest in the shingle?

Plover Lover Friday! ๐Ÿฆ

This summer, we're teaming up with organisations across the UK and around the world to celebrate and protect our vulnerable beach-nesting birds, the Ringed Plover, and here at Gib Point, the Little Tern and Oystercatcher.

Every Friday throughout the plover nesting season, we'll be sharing Ringed Plover stories, updates, and conservation successes. As well as highlighting work here in Lincolnshire, we'll also showcase the incredible efforts being made to protect these remarkable birds across the globe โ€“ from the Isles of Scilly to Ontario, Canada.

Follow along each Friday and help us spread the love for these amazing shorebirds!

It was Sports Day for our Tots this month!

With nature-based challenges to complete and tokens to collect, the children had a fantastic time exploring and playing. We also made flags to wave and cheer everyone on!

The challenges included wriggling like worms to aerate the soil, swooping like swallows to catch food out of the sky, and fluttering like butterflies while pollinating flowers.

If youโ€™d like to join us next month, you can book your place via [email protected] or find out more information in the posters below.

Sunday Species Spotlight: Sand Bear Spider (Arctosa perita)

The sand bear spider can be spotted along the coast of Britain where it prefers sandy shores and bare dune habitat but it can also be found in inland heathland habitats.

These spiders do not produce the conventional spider web but in fact burrow vertically into loose sandy substrate which they line with their webbing to prevent the walls from collapsing, and ambush any predators which stumble across their burrows such as flies, ants and beetles.

It has great camouflage due to the mosaic of pale/brown colourations and stripey legs which mimic the grains of sand it burrows into.

Did you know?
Whilst forming their burrows, they actually make a front door too! This is to quickly cover the entrance in case of any disturbance where they feel threatened, which then blends in with the surrounding area so these spiders can escape undetected!
