Something a bit different at Borden Grammar School next Saturday, 10 October.

The school is hosting a one-night performance of Discovering Antarctica: Heroic Tales of Shackleton, Crean & Scott, written and performed by award-winning Irish actor and Antarctic explorer Aidan Dooley.

It tells the extraordinary story of Tom Crean, who explored Antarctica with both Scott and Shackleton and took part in some of the most remarkable episodes of the heroic age of polar exploration — including a 36-mile solo march through brutal conditions to save his comrades and the extraordinary survival story of the Endurance expedition.

The show has toured internationally, including a performance in Antarctica itself, and has been seen by nearly 250,000 people.

It starts at 7pm, lasts around 90 minutes and is open to everyone, so please do share it with friends and family who might enjoy it.

Proceeds will also go towards Borden Grammar School’s MUGA Fund Appeal, helping repair the school’s outdoor sports area.

Can any Old Bordenians offer support to Borden Grammar School for this event in September?

A few photos from last week’s Dinner.

It was a good one. Full room, no awkwardness, just people settling into conversations easily, which is usually the sign these things are working.

It was particularly good to see more younger groups this year; it changes the feel of the evening straight away.

The Headteacher's school update struck the right note providing an upbeat, clear sense of what’s happening and where our OBA support actually makes a difference.

Also worth saying: the food was properly good. Not “fine”, not “for an event”, just good food, served well and we're grateful to the catering team once again.

And in the background, the evening did what it’s meant to do, raised money that goes straight back into the school. In part thanks to another successful auction of school ephemera for which our thanks to the team at Borden Grammar School for raiding the archives.

If you’ve been thinking about it but never quite got round to booking, next year’s an easy one to fix.

Final preparations underway for Saturday's OBA Annual Reunion & Dinner in the 1928 Hall.

We've reached capacity this year, which is encouraging, and a good reminder that the Association is only as active as the people who choose to stay connected to it.

If you're not yet a member, it takes a couple of minutes to join (free, lifelong), and it's the simplest way to stay in the loop for future events and to support what we're doing with the School.

We'll share a few moments from the evening over the weekend.
