Signal A charity supporting those who are Deaf or have hearing loss in Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania.

Our Vision is an inclusive world for all that breaks down barriers and empowers people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus, so that no one is left behind.

Our current programme of work takes place in the UK, in Shropshire, where we are based, and internationally in sub-Saharan Africa, where we have projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Through our programmes we aim to bre

ak down the barriers that are faced by people who are deaf, having hearing loss or tinnitus. We do this by challenging perceptions and improving access to healthcare, education, employment and services . We work in partnership to achieve positive change, which is led by the communities we work with. Signal was founded in 2013 through the coming together of two well established charities; the Woodford Foundation and the Shropshire Deafness Association. These organisations have been engaged in enabling people with hearing loss in the UK and overseas for over a century and a half. Since then we have supported over 94,000 people directly.

This summer we got to visit our project in Malawi. It was great to meet the whole team and see the impact on the 70 schools we're working in. Here's a quick summary of what we got up to!

In the warm heart of Africa, we finally got the opportunity to visit our team in Malawi after the pandemic had postponed the trip multiple times over the past couple of years. We were greeted by Thomas (project manager) and his recognisable smile which instantly made us at home. In truth, it was dif...

Nasser, the Senior Programmes Officer at our partners SignHealth Uganda, set up The Silent Cafe, a cafe owned and run by Deaf people.

Growing up Deaf, Nasser knew how hard it was for Deaf young people to find employment, and set up the cafe to employ others like him. He now employs three Deaf young people.

Roy (pictured) is Deaf has been involved in our projects growing up and now works part-time at the cafe as well as practicing his directing and drama work on the side.

Make sure to visit if you’re ever in Kampala! β˜•

An update on Signal πŸ“£

After our main project in the UK ended last year, and after much consideration, we have decided to cease our UK work and focus on our international work in sub-Saharan Africa.

We believe this is where our efforts and energy are best placed moving forward and where we can have the greatest impact.

We are excited for this next chapter at Signal and would like to thank you for your continued support.

If you have any questions about the changes in our work or would like to be signposted to other organisations who can offer support in the UK, please email [email protected].
