Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing

Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing We are an Arms Length Management Organisation (or ALMO for short.) But Shropshire Council still owns all the homes.

We manage the tenancies, homes and neighbourhoods of Shropshire Council, Council homes in the Oswestry and Bridgnorth areas - collecting rent, ordering repairs and making improvements to all housing.

This week, we invited local councillors to join us on tours of some of our empty homes, to show what’s involved in getting them ready for new customers.

Every empty home, often called a ‘void’, needs to be checked, repaired and brought up to a safe, lettable standard before someone can move in. The tours helped give a clearer picture of the work that happens behind the scenes and the steps our teams take to get homes ready.

Where we can, we also use this time to make improvements, such as increasing energy efficiency, helping to future proof homes and keep them affordable to run.

We visited homes in the north of the county on Monday with our Managing Director, and in the south on Wednesday with our Operations Director. Both tours were led by our Head of Repairs and Maintenance, who shared insight into the work taking place.

It was a good opportunity to talk about the level of investment involved and the work required to bring homes back into use.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend and speak with our teams.

💬 Customer voice shared on a national stage

We’re really proud of Nicky, Chair of our Scrutiny Panel, who recently spoke at the National Federation of ALMOs Annual Conference 2026.

Nicky shared her experience as a customer and how being involved has helped bring real changes to services. She spoke about the work of our Scrutiny Panel, the importance of listening to customers, and why challenging stigma around council housing matters.

It’s great to see customer voice represented at this level and making a difference across the housing sector 💚

🌍 World Environment Day: making our homes greener together

Today is World Environment Day – a chance to celebrate the small and big ways we can all help protect our planet 💚

At STAR Housing, we’re investing in warmer, more energy‑efficient homes to support both our customers and the environment.

Here’s what we’ve been doing:

♻️ Improving insulation and thermal performance so homes stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer
☀️ Installing solar panels to help reduce energy use and lower bills
🏡 Increasing the number of homes with higher EPC ratings – moving closer to the Government’s 2030 target.

These improvements don’t just help the environment – they also create healthier, more comfortable homes and can help reduce issues like damp and mould.

We’ll continue investing in greener homes for our communities 🌱

🚛 Skip events – week one complete!

Our first week of skip events is done – and what a great start! 👏

We kicked things off at Weston Close in Shifnal on Monday, headed to Swan Lane in Oswestry on Tuesday, and finished at The Meads in Weston Rhyn on Wednesday. Even with heavy rain on Monday 🌧️ and strong winds on Wednesday 💨, you showed up – and we filled three full skips! 🙌

It’s been fantastic to see our senior management team out and about at these events, meeting customers and seeing our communities first-hand. Our Managing Director joined us on Tuesday, our Head of Repairs was there on Monday, and our health and safety contractor, Safety For, supported us on Wednesday. These events are a great chance to have a chat, share your feedback and speak directly to the team – so please come along and say hello 👋

As well as being a great opportunity to clear out unwanted items, these events help everyone play their part in keeping our communities clean, safe and tidy 💚

A big thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a success.

📅 Our next skip event is at Hill Top Close in Whittington on 17 June.

You can find the full list of upcoming events on our website:

We hope to see you there! 👋

⚠️ Asbestos in your home – what you need to know

Asbestos can be found in some older homes, but in most cases it can be managed safely and doesn’t pose a risk if it’s in good condition and left undisturbed.

At STAR, we carry out surveys across the homes we manage so we know where asbestos may be and how to deal with it safely.

If work is needed, this will always be carried out by licensed professionals and we’ll keep you informed throughout.

It’s important to remember:
• Do not try to remove asbestos yourself
• Do not drill or disturb areas where asbestos may be present

If you’re planning any changes to your home, please contact us first so we can provide advice and make sure it’s safe to go ahead.
