May has been a busy month for incidents. We've been involved in a total of 8 incidents. Here's a brief summary:

4/5 - 2 persons overboard from boat approaching harbour. We alerted the Coastguard who were able to arrange an ambulance for persons picked up from the water by passing RIB. Out of control boat was recovered by passing yacht to Shoreham Harbour.

11/5 - Requested by the Coastguard to get eyes on a kayaker believed to be struggling to make their ways back to shore against an offshore wind. Shoreham Lifeboat was launched and found a person on a paddle boarding fishing. Lifeboat escorted the paddleboarder back to shore.

16/5 - We observed a dinghy with 3 persons on board that appearing to be in trouble due to the conditions. We informed the Coastguard who tasked us to con Shoreham inshore lifeboat which was already on the water training. Lifeboat escorted the dinghy back to the harbour.

17/5 - We received a call from a member of the public informing us of an orange and black object drifting approximately 1 mile off Lancing. We informed the Coastguard. A nearby yacht was known to one of the watchkeepers and contact was made. The yacht was conned to the object which confirmed that it was a wind surfer kite. Kite was recovered by the yacht and the Coastguard confirmed it was one which had been lost earlier.

19/5 - The Coastguard requested us to monitor a vessel which was reported as not making progress by a member of the public. We monitored the vessel and confirmed that the vessel was ok and making progress.

24/5 - We were requested by the Coastguard to get eyes on an object in the water south-east of the harbour. Object appeared to be piece of wood. Shoreham Coastguard also responded and concurred that it was likely to be driftwood. We were stood down with thanks.

25/5 - We were requested by Shoreham Coastguard to assist in searching for a missing child between Shoreham and Worthing. Child was quickly located by others.

28/5 - Whilst doing the morning beach patrol. We recovered large NOS gas cannisters. We informed the police. Cannisters were later collected.

A flock of our watchkeepers got a chance to visit the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) at Fareham and the Coastguard helicopter base at Lee-on-Solent. This was a wonderful opportunity to get to learn, at first hand, more about the Coastguard.

At JRCC, we were hosted by Sam, Aeronautical and Maritime Operations Manager who gave us a comprehensive run down of everything the Coastguard did and how we fit into the UK's maritime search and rescue efforts. We were then able to get a high level overview look into the operations room, with it being explained how it all worked.

After lunch, we were greeted by duty pilot John at the Lee-on-Solent helicopter base. With over 20+ years of SAR helicopter flying, John certainly knew what he was talking about! It was a great opportunity to learn more about these impressive machines and their capabilities.

Thanks to Sam and John for hosting us, and watchkeeper Dave for organising.

Heading to the coast this weekend? Stay safe and enjoy the sea responsibly

Before you set off:
✅ Check the weather and tide times
✅ Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible
✅ Keep an eye on children and pets near the water
✅ Take plenty of water, sunscreen, and a charged phone

If you get into trouble in the water:
➡️ Float on your back, stay calm, and raise your hand for help.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Have a brilliant and safe bank holiday weekend! 🌤️

Something we don't see every day. The cruise ship World Navigator came within about 2 miles of Shoreham yesterday afternoon.

Able to hold up to 200 guests, she was built in 2021. The ship is currently in London, getting ready to go way up north for cruising within the Artic circle.

Congratulations to Steve who has passed his assessment & is now one of our qualified Watchkeepers. Welcome to the team!

On Sunday afternoon, we observed an inflatable boat approaching the harbour. The 2 persons onboard fell into the sea, and with the engine still running, the boat continued round in circles.

We immediately phoned 999 for the Coastguard and informed them of the situation.

Fortunately, there were other vessels nearby who also spotted the incident and came to the aid of the 2 persons in the water within minutes.

There was communication between the vessels on the local harbour VHF radio channel, which we relayed the messages directly to the Coastguard. This included the need for one of the persons requiring medical attention. The Coastguard was able to arrange an ambulance to meet the persons ashore.

The 2 persons were brought to Shoreham Port locks by a RIB who pulled the persons out of the water, where they met the ambulance ashore.

The inflatable boat was caught and towed in by a yacht. (Pictured)

The Coastguard thanked us for our assistance.

Commenting on the incident, Colin Clay, station manager at Shoreham NCI, said: "Thankfully the nearby vessels were able to come to their aid quickly. This situation also shows the importance of wearing a kill cord to stop the engine should the helm fall overboard."

Last week, we were invited by Shoreham Port for a presentation by the harbour master, tour of Harbour Radio, and a trip up the canal.

It was an excellent morning and thoroughly enjoyed by all watchkeepers learning more about the port. We also discussed our impact on the safety of those coming in and out of the harbour.

Thank you for having us again!
