Make a plaster batt and textured slab.
Learn the basics of working with plaster while making a reusable plaster batt and a textured
plaster slab for clay work.
Come along and learn the basics of working with plaster in this practical, hands-on session. You’ll
make two useful plaster pieces to take away and use again and again in your clay practice: a
plaster batt and a textured plaster slab.
You’ll learn how to safely mix, pour and shape plaster, with guidance throughout the process. No
previous experience with plaster is needed, and people of all levels of clay experience are
welcome.
Make a plaster batt
Plaster batts are useful for a range of clay processes. They absorb moisture from clay and can be
used for slab building, drying clay forms, wedging and recycling clay.
You’ll pour plaster into a frame to create a portable batt, which you can take away and use in your
own clay practice.
Make a textured plaster slab
Plaster is excellent at capturing fine detail, making it ideal for creating textured surfaces for clay.
You’ll first roll out a slab of clay (maximum 20 x 20cm) and create a surface design using
imprinting, mark making or found textures. Plaster will then be poured over the clay to capture the
texture and create your plaster slab.
Your finished slab can be used in two ways: as a decorative wall piece, or as a textured surface
for rolling or pressing clay into to create interesting patterns and textures.
You’re welcome to bring your own textured object or surface to work with. Alternatively, there will
be a range of textured materials and objects available in the pottery for you to experiment with.
Please note: We’ll be working with dry plaster powder, so you’ll need to wear an apron and P3
dust mask when weighing and mixing the plaster. We have aprons, reusable masks and gloves
available at the Hive, but you’re very welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
