The hedgehog rescue is collecting newspapers again and our colleagues at The Hedgehoggery in Shipley also need them if you are nearer to them. Magazines aren't helpful as they have too much print to be absorbent but any newspaper is great.

DM the rescue for the address to drop off. Thank you so much in advance.

We sort them into beautiful staple-less stacks like this if you fancy doing that for us that's also helpful as it can take hours but we'll take them how they come.

Zebedee rescued by Openreach engineer Liam.

Today we were contacted about an out in the day hoglet. Zebedee was found by Openreach engineer Liam Peckover. Zebedee was being pestered by a dog whose owner found it funny to let their dog ‘play’ with him. Luckily Liam, who was working on a telegraph pole in BD10 spotted and rescued Zebedee and contacted a rescue. Liam brought Zebedee to us in his lunchtime and we took the opportunity to photograph them together. Liam is a real hoggie hero.
Zebedee was weighed and administered sub cut fluids appropriate to his weight. He’s now snuggled into a nice warm box with a blankie and supply of Royal Canin Mother and Babycat Biscuits soaked in Oralade which he wasted no time discovering and scarfing!

Hog of the day. Bertie from Armley came in with his brother Bob. Both are doing well and gaining weight.

It’s almost that time of year again. Sound advice from BHPS….

It's less than a month until bonfire night - have you made plans yet?

🚫 Stop – do you need to have a bonfire this year? The fewer bonfires there are, the fewer wildlife casualties there are too.

🫳 Move - if you do decide to have a bonfire, always build it on the day you plan to light it. Move all accumulated materials to a new clear site as hedgehogs & other wildlife or pets may be hiding inside.

🔦 Check - before lighting from one side, check the entire bonfire pile carefully for wildlife & pets.

These four have gone for release today. Elsie has been collected by her finders and returned to Utley, Keighley. Rory also has been collected by his finders and returned to Yeadon, Antonia has also gone to Yeadon with Lisa one of our volunteers who found Nemo earlier in the year so, who knows there may be the patter of tiny feet in spring! Arthur is going home with another of our volunteers tomorrow to live in her gorgeous garden in Nab Wood, Bingley.

Al was brought in from Addingham this morning after being found stuck in a sunken patio area. He weighs under 150g and was a tad dehydrated. He’s been given supporting fluids and a hand feed but has proved he can managed feeding himself by demolishing a small dish of Royal Canin Mother and Babycat biscuits soaked in Oralade. Al will likley overwinter here at The Hedgehoggery and will be released with his finders in spring.

Milo from Northcliffe Park is still with us, he’s struggling to maintain his weight and is being supported with sub cut fluids, hand feeds and extra vitamins. He is bright and inquisitive in himself and he has been observed nibbling his mother and babycat biscuits soaked in Oralade.

Our beautiful old girl Alice. She’s a lovely chestnut colour and is losing pigment in her nose and feet which is a sign of a venerable age. She’s so calm when we’re cleaning and dressing her wounds. Just as we thought she was almost mended we discovered another abscess hidden under her spines. Alice was admitted after experiencing a dog attack, she had a lot of blood in her mouth but no other apparent injuries. Hidden between her spines however, were three puncture wounds which developed into abscesses. The first two were cleaned, flushed and debrided by the brilliant Charlotte at Oakbank Vets.
