Telemachus 148g, collected from Otley this morning, out in the daytime, he was very dehydrated, emaciated and had flystrike and hatched maggots in intimate orifices. Just as we’d finished cleaning him up and getting him warm and hydrated he was followed by a litter mate Odysseus 247g dehydrated but in slightly better condition. Both have nasty green mucousy p**p and are quite unwell. Both have been started on tummy medicine and have been hand fed every couple of hours since admit.

Nikki brought Blossom back this morning, luminous green p**p and lots of lungworm. She also has a liberal sprinkling of roundworm and fluke. Treatment has begun immediately. She’s coughing really badly so she’s started on an anti inflammatory, being nebulised and will begin antibiotics tomorrow.
Nikki kindly took Thomas back with her to Morley for release at Tracey’s. Thomas has been marked and chipped in the usual fashion.

….aaand Butch is lapping. Having decided he doesn’t want to spend another night in Matrons bedroom, he’s going to spend tonight shacked up with Berty and Bob from Armley in the big incubator in the hogspital. They’re all snuggled up together like brothers from another mother, which is what they actually are!.

One out, one in. Just as Valeria left, Butch was brought in from Burley in Wharfedale. He was found all on his lonesome screaming for his mum. He weighs 107g, a similar weight to Berty and Bob that came in from Armley last night. Although a similar weight, Butch is less developed with an estimated age of around three weeks. Butch will spend tonight in the incubator in matrons bedroom so he can be fed through the night. The intention is to introduce him to Berty and Bob once he’s stabilised.
They’ve all been started on a medicine that will sort any tummy issues they may have.

These two were collected yesterday by Mandy and taken for release in Gomersal. Andrew originated in Gomersal but Litha was brought in as a poorly hoglet from Horsforth. As we needed the space and Mandy’s garden is an ideal hedgehog environment with an existing hedgehog population, we decided to relocate Litha. Both are subtly marked and microchipped.

Valeria, has been collected by Sandra, one of our volunteers for release in her garden. Her mum Bev was injured with a garden fork so we hand reared Valeria. Valeria was 39g on arrival and left today weighing 1212g. She shared an outside hutch with Litha (now released) and it’s now obvious who ate all the pies!

Bromley returned to Bingley with his finder this evening. He’s subtly marked and chipped in our usual fashion. He’s been in our outdoor hutch becoming acclimatised. He’s 678g, he’s been sent home with a new house, barley straw bedding and a bag of Iams kitten biscuits.

This AMAZING woman taught and mentored me. We would not be the great rescue we are today without the knowledge and support of Steph at Hedgehog Emergency Rescue, Bingley Yorkshire HERBY. Her vision to build a large purpose built Hedgehog Hospital will hopefully come to fruition in the near future.

Over 4000 hedgehogs saved in 14 years - Absolutely amazing work!

It was fantastic to visit Hedgehog Emergency Rescue, Bingley Yorkshire HERBY, meet the founder, Steph, and discuss how I can support the great work that they do, as our local MP.

Based in Eldwick, this brilliant local non-profit organisation works to rehabilitate then release sick, injured or orphaned wild British hedgehogs.

But the centre needs support. Steph and the team are experiencing their busiest ever year in large part due to the extreme heat.

Gordon was collected by his finder Michaela this evening and returned to his garden in Pudsey. As usual he’s been marked and microchipped. He has a barley straw filled box and will be support fed and watered daily. Gordon has been a model patient and left us with a big toothy smile!
His place has been taken by a large ruttly chested female named Pink from Bingley, a juvenile female from Riddlesden named Raven and Cecelia, a very poorly geriatric female from Horsforth whose finder brought her on the train from Kirkstall.
Waiting in the wings for admit are two small 87g & 98g hoglets.
