Today we’re sharing the difficult news that Causeway is proposing a managed closure of our services in 2026. After a detailed financial review, we can no longer operate sustainably.
We’ve notified the Home Office and are working closely with The Salvation Army to ensure safe, continuous support for everyone currently in our services. All operational services are expected to close by the end of June 2026.
Our priority throughout this transition is the wellbeing of the people we support and our colleagues. All staff are being supported, and service users will be contacted directly by their advocate.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our work. We ask for kindness and understanding during this period.
Should you have any concerns or questions you can get in touch via [email protected]

When someone is groomed for exploitation, whether by an individual or a gang, it doesn't happen overnight. The relationship is built slowly. Whether it’s framed as a friendship or romance, trust is cultivated through attention, gifts, compliments or favours, creating a sense of loyalty and emotional connection. Once that bond is established, the groomer ‘calls in’ the debt, which usually involves s*xual or criminal exploitation.

Joey* was groomed online by a man they believed loved them. But his initial kindness and affection were lies. He s*xually exploited Joey as a way to pay for drugs. Read Joey’s here: https://www.wearecauseway.org.uk/slavery_stories/joeys-story/

At Causeway, we welcome efforts to ensure people who have experienced exploitation are protected. However, it is vital that changes to immigration policy do not unintentionally restrict access to support for survivors of modern slavery.

Many people who have been trafficked or exploited enter the UK through irregular routes, often under coercion or in desperate circumstances. Any reforms to asylum support must recognise these realities and ensure survivors can still access the protection and recovery support they need.

To mark we’ve been reflecting on the support Causeway offers the women who come into our service, particularly those who arrive pregnant, or with young children.

Over the past two years, Causeway advocates have supported 30 pregnant women to welcome their babies with dignity and care. Whether in our family safehouses or out in the community, our advocates work closely alongside each woman, helping her access the services, support, and essentials she needs to feel safe and healthy, and to give birth in a way that feels empowering for her and her family.

A recent government consultation has highlighted the need for trauma-informed, consistent support for victims of modern slavery.

Causeway joined organisations across the sector to share evidence on improving identification processes and ensuring survivors can access support quickly and safely.

We are pleased to see many of these recommendations reflected in the consultation findings.

Latest Home Office figures from 2025 reveal that overall, potential victims were most commonly referred into the NRM for labour exploitation, which accounted for 36% (8,406) of all referrals. Sectors where labour exploitation is likely to be found include the care, hospitality, and construction industries, as well as ‘low-skilled’ transient employment such as car washes and food delivery.

Fill out our online labour exploitation risk checker for more information on spotting the signs of labour exploitation, and where to get help. Visit: https://www.wearecauseway.org.uk/risk-checkers/

At just 12-years-old Joey* was groomed online by an older man. He bombarded Joey with attention, compliments and gifts until he had won their trust and loyalty. Within months, he was trafficking Joey from house to house to be exploited for s*x to pay off his debts.

Using skills they learned whilst completing a HND in Fine Art, Joey created an animation that reflects the reality of their grooming experience in the hope it may help other. You can read Joey’s story and watch the full version here: https://www.wearecauseway.org.uk/slavery_stories/joeys-story/

Joey was 12 when they visited online chatrooms to find support for their mental health struggles. An older man recognised that Joey was young and vulnerable, and encouraged them to take the chat offline and into the real world. He bombarded Joey with attention and affection, as well as drugs and alcohol. Within months Joey believed they were in a relationship, and when he asked Joey to help him with some debt by having s*x with his friends, Joey felt they couldn’t say no.

Joey has created an animation reflecting how they were groomed online. Read more of their story and watch the animation here: https://www.wearecauseway.org.uk/slavery_stories/joeys-story/
