There are some great events across Sheffield to get involved with over the next few weeks!

NEW for 2026: Join us for an inspiring afternoon of short talks from people actively involved in protecting and improving Sheffield’s environment and green spaces.

As part of Sheffield Environment Weeks, this “community talks” session brings together a range of local groups, campaigners and community projects. Each speaker will give a short 10-minute introduction to their work, followed by the opportunity for questions.

The session will highlight practical environmental action happening across the city — from urban nature and community growing to plastic reduction, local history, sustainable living and moorland protection.

Speakers include:

Jenny Morton — Hillsborough History Group
Sarah Emberson — Darnall Allotment Project & Green City Action
Louise Bull — Friends of Parkwood Springs
Clive Swinscoe — Moorland Monitors: Reclaim the Moors
Verity Brack — Friends of Loxley Cemetery
Carmel Page — Storyteller and mindful consumption champion
Barbara Bristow — Well Field Community Farm (Greave House Farm Trust)
Carmel Page — Sheffield Action on Plastic
Calvin Payne — Hidden Walks Sheffield

This is a great opportunity to discover the wide range of grassroots environmental activity happening in Sheffield, meet the people behind it, and find ways to get involved.

Very sad to announce that the community allotment is closed for at least 18 months. This is because Yorkshire Water are digging up the whole site in order to put in a long overdue storm over flow tank. They tell us that this tank will reduce the overflow of sewagey water into the brook in the park from over 100 times a year to ten. Don't ask me why 10 is ok, but having watched Channel 4 s docudrama 'Dirty Business' I guess we are getting off lightly, if we can believe it.
The future of Firth Park Community Allotment depends on the compensation Yorkshire Water give us. Unfortunatly what they have offered us a flat rate does not represent the losses that we face. It's disgusting, but not suprising, that despite 3 members of Yorkshire Water staff, and one person from the company that have been contracted to work out compensation having visted the site for an extended anount of time, they are only offering us compensation for a small shed in terms of buildings. They have all seen with their own eyes that we have a commercial polytunnel, commercial metal lock up shed, a standard metal lock up shed and 2 very large classroom/office/Storage sheds, but apparently we still have to 'prove' to them that we had more than a 6 by 4 shed. And don't get me started on trying to explain to them the loss of a community asset of 20 years, the amount of time it will take to get the allotment back up to the productivity it has now after the removal of mature fruit trees and bushes and TOPSOIL!

Litter around Firth Park shopping centre is terrible at the moment - not helped by all the rain we've been having. Please help to clean up Firth Park by joining us on our regular monthly
Community Litter Pick this Saturday.

The garden may be yawning into life with its first fragile sounds and scents - but the soil is still too cold to sow. Instead, spend time planning for your gardening year ahead.

Chit early potatoes, winter prune fruit trees and prepare veg beds. Bare roots fruits can still be planted, and sweet peas and tender annuals and vegetables can be sown on a warm windowsill in preparation for summer.

Plus, look out for:
🐸Frogs, toads and newts emerging from hibernation to spawn in garden ponds.
🐝Queen bumblebees foraging for early nectar from crocuses, lungwort and snowdrops.
💛Brimstone butterflies venturing out to feed on primroses.

January is a great month to get prepared. Warm up with a greenhouse cleaning workout and wash out pots and trays. Snow is not the only thing that can sparkle at this time of year!

Look out for 👀

- Robins, blue t**s and starlings this month, as they head into your garden to find food. And take part in the at the end of the month to collect valuable data.

- The first snowdrop! A valuable source of early pollen/nectar for winter-active bees and emerging queen bumblebees. Crocus, grape hyacinth and winter aconite are also great choices for a wildlife-friendly garden.
