Your old bin as a Water Butt? As we already have water butts at Sheffield Environmental HQ our old blue bin is a stand alone container, that we now full with watering cans. It sits on a stack of bricks three layers high, so it can easily drain into watering cans. The weight of water in the bin prevents the stack from wobbling along with a piece of former roof slate to level it. These are patio bricks we acquired as they were going spare some time ago, the only thing bought for this was the tap from B&Q for £6.50. You could also buy the drain pipe attachment to plumb it into a downspout if you don't already have a water butt.
This idea was inspired by our late next door neighbour who for years used a wheelie bin as a water butt before they became popular in gardens. The Benecol bottle in shot was there to put the plastic shavings in from drilling the hole to ensure they can be recycled.

Our wishes go out to anyone affected by the tragedy but the worst thing about it is that this his is what climate change looks like. A series of events linked to warming, extreme weather events. Glaciers melting, pools of water forming at glaciers until they can't hold it anymore. The water then bursts out as the icy dam breaks, a wall of water rushes down the valley sweeping away whatever's in its path. Social media has featured a number of small floods and landslides associated with this type of event this year. This one made the news because a significant number of people have been affected. This is going to keep happening as temperatures rise, until the glaciers are no longer able to form significant pockets of water.

Hundreds are feared to have died in flooding and landslides on the border of Nepal and Tibet.

PLEASE SIGN PETITION; Strengthen Wildfire Response Funding, ie; fund WATER BOMBERS. This summer has seen a significant increase of out of control wildfires that have caused a danger to life and destroyed vast areas of our landscape. Most notably this has included the Cairngorms National Park, Moorlands around the Woodhead Pass and Dunwich Heath in Suffolk. The fires around Woodhead Pass have seen one of our major connections closed for weeks, severely impacting people locally.

Wildfires are becoming more frequent and more severe due to hotter, drier weather. Fire and Rescue Services often have to rely solely on ground crews, which can struggle to reach fires in remote areas such as moorland, forests and mountains.

We're able to restart using the blue bin service in Sheffield. Are you one of the people in Sheffield who's had their bin tagged for collection and not received their new blue bin? How long past your changeover day are you? We want to help you now.

Thank you to Veolia | UK & Ireland for sorting our local office so we got our new bin, now we don't have to use a neighbour's. We know that many don't have that luxury yet and that needs sorting ASAP. We can't have people in a position where they can't use their bins properly.

Anyone calling Friday's national emergency alarm trivial is effectively saying that news stories like this and the homes across the country destroyed by fire are normal. There is nothing normal about this, the duration of heat, the lack of rainfall, the number of fires, the destruction. They highlight the incremental changes that are happening to our climate and we need everyone to take care and reduce the risk to others.

"Massive respect to everyone on duty over the last week."

Firefighters tackled nearly 800 incidents in South Yorkshire during last week's heatwave. That's a rise of more than 60% on the same week last year.

Our Blue Bin at Sheffield Environmental HQ has now been sorted, thanks to Veolia's national social media. However many others aren't so lucky.

Blue Bin fiasco! Almost a month on from when we were supposed to get our blue bin we're still waiting. Do we get a rebate on our council tax for the time that we're making alternative arrangements for disposing of our paper and card? How hard can it be to leave a new bin by each property so they can start using that one straight away? Why is it a lottery for who gets their bin on which day? When will this all be sorted? We've been patient, but it has crossed a line now!

; Almost two months ago in Burncross our bins were tagged, notifying us that the next blue bin collection would be our last with the smaller bins. They would be replacing them with the larger ones on the day of the next delivery and taking the old ones away if we wished. Come rollout day, they took the old bins away, but many houses didn't get the new blue bin. We have been without for nearly 4 weeks. As Sheffield Environmental we want to ensure all waste is dealt with in a way that's as sustainable as possible, so we don't want to dispose of it in the black bin. So we're using neighbour's bins, but not everyone will do this. Many will put it in their black bins, which will make our waste disposal system less sustainable.

It's a start, the temporary ban on disposable barbecues needs to become permanent, with minimum safety standards required for the sale of all barbecues nationwide.
