Friends of Parkwood Springs

Friends of Parkwood Springs We help to protect & conserve the wildlife & natural environment & improve the green space of Parkwood Springs to make it 'our country park in the city'.

Parkwood Springs is an amazing natural 'wild' space close to the centre of the city of Sheffield. There is woodland and heath, open parkland, and a range of natural habitats where wild lupins bloom, rabbits run and kestrels hover. There are spectacular views over the city centre, the suburbs and the distant moors of the Peak District. Parkwood Springs runs for nearly 1.5 miles from Rutland Road in

the south to Herries Road, at Shirecliffe, to the north. It includes the old Sheffield Ski Village, and leads on to Wardsend Cemetery. You can get a sense of the area and find out more about it from our website. But if you haven't been already, please come and see for yourself.

This Saturday 30th May our Conservation Session with Ranger Katy will be working on the Frog Life Pond path - in the shade! We'll be cutting back any obstructing vegetation on this less used path which gives access to the pond (see how the tadpoles are doing) and some of the bilberry and crowberry on a bit of our rare lowland heath. Come dressed for the weather and meet on the Shirecliffe Road car park S5 8XB at 10.00am. We'll work through until about 12.30pm with a well-earned refreshment break in the middle.

We were really pleased to welcome friends old and new to St Catherine's School on Wednesday for Carol Schofield's very interesting talk about Mediaeval Deer Parks, especially the one that created Parkwood Springs. We sold quite of few of Carol's new book 'Parkwood Springs The story of a Mediaeval Deer Park and how it became Our Country Park in the City' - but you can still get a copy at any of our coming events, cost £8. Alternatively go to our website http://www.parkwood-springs.org.uk/publications.html and we'll post one to you for £10 including postage and packing.

It was quite cold at 5am on Sunday morning as 25 intrepid visitors set out on our annual Dawn Chorus Walk, led as ever by the brilliant John and Anne Robinson of the Sheffield RSPB. Unfortunately some of our other summer visitors decided to wake up a bit later, so our species count was down a bit at 17, but it didn't stop us all having a great time - including the very welcome post-walk breakfast provided by Carol and Neill Schofield. Thanks to Stacey for the great photos.

This Wednesday, May 13th, Carol Schofield will be talking about her new book, 'Parkwood Springs: The story of a medieval deer park and how it became our country park in the city.' The talk will be at St Catherine's School, Firshill Crescent, S4 7BX, starting at 7.00pm.

After the talk there will be an opportunity to buy a copy of the book, and to chat to Carol over a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Everyone is welcome!

Everyone's getting up early on Parkwood Springs - this Sunday 10th May we'll be gathering on the Shirecliffe Road car park (S5 8XB) at 5am for our annual Dawn Chorus Walk, led as always by the redoubtable John Robinson of Sheffield RSPB. On May Day around 100 people danced and sang to welcome the sun at dawn - some wearing the masks they had created at Patrick Amber and Jo Veal's workshops at Abbeyfield House.
