Really great afternoon speaking with local people about their access to rail, transport habits, and how PLP can help everyone who would like to use the train, to buy tickets, use passenger assistance, and feel confident travelling.
Hoping to work with Barnsley Council Pen*stone Area Team in the future. Thanks for putting on the event, and to the team at St Johns church for hosting in the afternoon.
We are working in partnership with Kirklees and Northern on upgrade plans between Lockwood and Denby Dale on infrastructure. Barnsley Council, Network Rail, Sable Leigh Consultants held consultations over summer on the plans for a park & ride, bridge and station improvements at Pen*stone, and Marie Tidball MP is arranging for Oliver Coppard to visit Pen*stone and work towards investment for 2 trains per hour on the Pen*stone Line.

I had a lovely afternoon at St John’s Church in Pen*stone commemorating the International Day of Older People 2026☀️
It was a fantastic chance to celebrate the contribution older people make to life in our communities, as well as the opportunities and support available locally to help people stay active, independent and connected as they get older.
🎶I enjoyed catching up with Barnsley u3a, hearing about the huge range of activities and opportunities they provide to learn, socialise and try something new, and Springvale Community Garden, a wonderful local space bringing people together in the outdoors.
🛤️It was also great to speak with Pen*stone FM and the Pen*stone Line Partnership, both of which play an important part in keeping our communities connected, as well as The Old Courthouse Day Centre, who provide activities, companionship and support for older people locally.
🚘I also caught up with the Volunteer Car Service, which helps people who might otherwise struggle to get out and about. They’re currently looking for more volunteer drivers – to enquire about the service or getting involved, call 01484 860077.
It was brilliant to see so many people coming together to celebrate later life and everything older people continue to bring to our communities.
A huge thank you to everyone to the Ageing Well Network and Carmen Taylor for organising this amazing event, all the volunteers and groups who helped out on the day and to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable afternoon!
