Our team is a mix of students, ranging from first year Undergraduates through to final year and Masters level students, from a range of subjects. Formula Student is an excellent chance for all those wanting to get involved to gain valuable experience and work within a like-minded team that share the same interests. The University's racing team has remerged to participate in previous years events:
2010-2011 and 2011-2012. Our past performance provides us with a foundation to build upon and fully integrate a team identity within Sheffield Hallam. Each year we aim to improve upon the previous year's performance; allowing the team to grow and mature, and our position in the event league tables along with it. Sheffield Hallam has recently begun participating in the international FSAE Formula Student event sponsored by the IMech E. This event requires students to independently design and build a formula series type car under the guise of creating and marketing this initial prototype as a business case. The car itself then has to undergo a series of both dynamic and static tests during an event weekend at the famous Silverstone Race Circuit in early July. The team must also pitch their business case as a viable plan within which investment can be made and their designs manufactured within a real world scenario. This project utilises a wide range of skill sets across the University, from the engineering faculty, to business and design in order to present successful designs in this very competitive and high level competition. The event allows our members to apply their knowledge gained in studies or extra-curricular activities to a real life project that requires attention to detail, teamwork and the drive to compete. Entirely extra-curricular and an item of esteem when seen on CV’s, the Formula Student project is undertaken alongside course modules and can challenge participants to properly and successfully time manage the individual and team workload.
