Archer Project

Archer Project Making a difference to the lives of people experiencing homelessness in Sheffield.

The Archer Project is a multi-agency hub where people experiencing homelessness in Sheffield and the surrounding areas can seek support. A place we call home is an essential part of life that means much more than shelter and safety. Homelessness can include sleeping rough as well as using occasional hostel spaces, camping on friends’ floors and sofas, and squatting. Our vision is to help individua

ls experiencing homelessness to find home and build a life enriched by its space, content and the sense of belonging it brings. A place of safety, warmth and support:

The Archer Project is a place where people feel welcomed and that people make their own. Clients include alcohol and substance dependents, street workers, people with learning difficulties and disabilities, refugees and asylum seekers from a variety of backgrounds and ages. They are supported by a team of dedicated project workers and given access to food, showers, medical support and much more.

“The thing about this place is they don’t offer you help with A, B or C. They just offer help”

A place where lives are changed:

We work with clients on an individual basis to encourage their self-esteem and motivation to help them take steps towards stability. Activities in the project give clients the chance to explore new hobbies and gain a greater sense of self-awareness and achievement. Educational activities help clients learn new skills and work towards volunteer roles. Volunteering gives responsibility within the project with the aims of working towards stability, employability and moving on.

“If I hadn’t started coming here I’d be on the streets, dead or locked up”

This , we’re taking a moment to reflect on and celebrate the incredible community of volunteers who make The Archer Project what it is💛

Every day, our volunteers give their time and compassion to support people experiencing homelessness. Without them, we simply couldn’t deliver the life-changing care and support that so many people in South Yorkshire rely on.

Whether it’s offering a warm welcome, making someone a cuppa, sharing a listening ear, supporting a workshop, leading a book club, or simply being a consistent, friendly face each day, our volunteers bring kindness and connection into every interaction.

We are so grateful for the generosity and dedication that each of our volunteers brings to our community.

Thank you all, you make our work possible! 💛

“There’s a really clear overlap between s*x work and homelessness in the women we support here in Sheffield. For a lot of women, s*x work isn’t a straightforward ‘choice’ and is often something that happens in the context of just trying to survive…” 💬

“I want to live here [in his flat] forever.” 💬

Since, 2019 we’ve supported Costel to progress away from homelessness. He now lives in his safe and stable, ‘forever’ home. 🏠

Over the years we’ve helped Costel to feel a sense of belonging, through activities such as animal therapy, trips to museums and consistent relationship building.

In 2020, he started volunteering within our Partnership Programme. A year later, we supported him to move into paid employment – within our Archer Project Enterprises at Just Clean. In this image you can see Costel during one of his cleaning shifts! Costel also works at Printed by Us in our shop and workshop in Orchard Square .

You can’t walk through The Project without hearing Costel making a joke or singing! He's even taken his singing skills to The Choir with No Name in Sheffield Cathedral . A symbol of his confidence and the sense of belonging that he feels.

This is just one part of one person’s story – last year we supported 1,201 people, please donate following this link 👉 archerproject.org.uk/donate to support more people just like Costel, to progress away from homelessness.

Without shelter, spending long hours in the sun significantly increases the risk of skin damage and skin cancer.🌡️

At The Project, we’ve seen first hand the impact of this heatwave — with many people experiencing dehydration and severe sun exposure. This morning, our courtyard quickly filled as people sought refuge in the shade.

Today, we've supported Sasha, Mark, James, and many others who had fallen asleep outdoors over the weekend, leaving them at risk of sunburn.

To help people stay safe in this extreme heat, we’ve been offering water, cool showers, sun cream, fresh clothing, and a safe, shaded space to rest for the day.☀️

We’ll continue to do all we can to keep some of the most vulnerable people in South Yorkshire safe during this weather.

If you are able to donate sun cream – we’d be so grateful. Your support will help us reduce the risk of long-term illness.

You can drop off donations at The Archer Project, Church Street, S1 1HA (at the Campo Lane entrance behind Sheffield Cathedral) 📍

Our opening hours are 8.30am-1pm on weekdays except Wednesdays, which are 8.30am - 10am ⌚️

You can also donate supplies through our Amazon wish list, here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTNEVRc6

“Life was tough. I was worried each night people were going to hurt me.”

Costel experienced street homelessness, both in his childhood and adulthood. “There was a lot of kids on the street – and I was one of them.”

When he arrived at The Project in 2019, he told us he was rough sleeping and begging for food in the busy night life area in Sheffield.

“I remember Andy [our Engagement Manager] was on the door.”

Next week we'll share Costel’s progression and where he is now.

This is just one part of one person’s story – last year we supported 1,201 people.

The cuckoo is a bird known for taking over the nests of others. In society, cuckooing is where someone takes control of a vulnerable person’s home for exploitation, control, or criminal activity.

Individuals affected experience deception, coercion, and manipulation, with serious consequences for their mental health and wellbeing.

At The Archer Project, we know that cuckooing and homelessness are closely linked. People with lived experience of homelessness are at greater risk due to overlapping challenges, including:

- Housing insecurity
- Substance dependency
- Survival s*x
- Mental health needs
- Neurodiversity
- Traumatic brain injuries and cognitive difficulties

On 12 May, new legislation in the UK came into effect making it a criminal offence to take control of someone’s home without consent for criminal purposes — an important step forward in recognising and tackling this harm.

In support of , we stand in solidarity with everyone impacted by cuckooing.

📑 Studies show that at least 48% of people experiencing homelessness have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re raising awareness of the impact that TBIs can have on wellbeing — and their link to homelessness.

Evidence shows that many people experienced their brain injury before homelessness, highlighting a powerful and often overlooked connection. 📈

A TBI can significantly affect someone’s mental health and wellbeing, including:

- Severe depression and anxiety disorders
- Cognitive impairment
- Increased impulsivity and mood swings
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Suicidal feelings

At The Project, in addition to a consistent, listening ear, we help people manage their mental health with book club, days out, volunteering opportunities, animal therapy, and discussion groups in a judgement free, inclusive space.

We can only provide this life-changing support with your help.
