The latest school census data has been released and it shows important growth in the number of young carers being identified here in Sheffield π
In 2026, 851 young carers were identified across Sheffield, which is approximately 1% of the local pupil population, and up massively from 215 identified young carers back in in 2023. This jump represents a whopping 296% increase in the number of identified young carers, showing that young carer awareness and identification in local schools is growing fast!
However, stats also show that 56% of schools didn't record a single young carer on their return. With an estimated 1 in 10 children and young people being carers, we know that there are still lots of young carers going unidentified and without the support they deserve π¨
At SYC, working with education providers has been a key focus for us for a while now. Our main work in this time includes:
Coordinating a schools network and a Post-16 network, to up-skill staff to identify and support young carers (https://ow.ly/o8J750Zax28) βοΈ
Providing teacher training at local universities βοΈ
Working actively with local partners to further highlight young carer voices across the city βοΈ
A pilot project with Learn Sheffield focusing on improving young carers' transitions from primary to secondary school βοΈ
And a major recent success - Young people from Sheffield Young Carers, Carers Trust, Young Carers National Voice and other young carers organisations nationally campaigned for a long time for young carers to be a recognised group in the OFSTED framework. Last September, Sir Martyn Oliver, Head of OFSTED, met some of these young people to hear their experiences and - as a result - young carers were added as a named group in the new OFSTED framework in 2025 βοΈ
We want to thank our remarkable Action Group members, staff team (particularly our Education Development Worker Shuna) and all of the incredible Young Carer Leads in education settings across Sheffield for your dedication to identifying and supporting young carers π
We still have work to do to identify all the hidden young carers in our city and beyond - but together - we will get there π
