We can't wait to see what 'econiches' Andrew Vickers Art - stoneface comes up with!

Working out of a hideaway in the Loxley Valley, Andrew Vickers has been tasked with creating ‘eco-niches’ for threatened species to call home.

Thank you to every single volunteer that helps look after our nature reserves, supports campaigns, surveys wildlife and takes action for nature, helping wildlife to thrive across Sheffield and Rotherham.
We could give you stats on the number of hours and volunteers, but we think our volunteers speak best for themselves. When asked what they enjoy most about volunteering they've told us they enjoy meeting like minded people, being active in nature, and making a difference to somewhere they love.

Wondering which butterflies you’ve seen during your adventures? 🦋

June is the perfect time to spot butterflies as gardens, parks, and wild spaces come alive in summer.

Take a moment to slow down, watch what’s flying past, and see how many different species you can find.

Use our ID guide to help you figure out exactly which butterfly you’ve spotted 👉

Spotted a butterfly but not sure what it is? Here are some common British butterflies you might see in your garden, and how to identify them.

Friday Fact! The meadow pipit is a common nesting bird of moorland, heathland and rough grassland.

On moorlands, meadow pipits are the most common 'foster parents' of young cuckoos.

The adult cuckoo will lay a single egg in a meadow pipit's nest. After hatching, the cuckoo chick will push the other eggs or young birds out of the nest, giving its foster parents more time to concentrate on feeding their new, oversized chick.

This month is a fantastic time to spot flowering orchids in undisturbed grasslands.

Keep an eye out for the common spotted-orchid - the UK’s most common orchid - as well as the bee orchid which cleverly mimics a female bee to attract pollinators.

On World Peatlands Day we're giving a big damp hug to one of the most important habitats to help solve the current climate and biodiversity crisis.

In the UK;

🍀Peatlands hold over 3 billion tons of carbon; that's over 3 times more than our woodlands.

🌊They also hold back water to reduce flooding.

🪰Support an amazing array of nature, including the sundew, one of our few carnivorous plant species!

🚨But 80% of UK peatlands are damaged, causing them to emit carbon rather than store it.

Peatlands come in various forms, including bogs, and recently we've teamed up with Weddles who have become Agden Bog's Nature Reserve Guardian - they'll be helping us monitor and improve the site.

We've also been working with hydrology and vegetation experts at Sheffield Hallam University, looking at how the bogs at Blacka Moor can be improved.
