Stake stake stake! Seems to be THE topic at the moment for us on here. We’ve stocked up on our 1m locally sourced larch stakes; Thanks to Sheffield Timber Co. These have a mean tip on them, so nice and easy getting in the ground. Most trees can do with being staked for the first years of their lives - and the dwarfing varieties usually want it forever. Put simply, staking helps to stabilise the roots as they anchor, or when they struggle anchoring enough, avoiding falling and uprooting due to winds or heavy fruits (a topic for another day)

Ouch!! Despite being on a site with big badger setts, and veg growing neighbours in constant battle, we’ve never experience any badger damage ourselves - Until now!? This crab tree has not had any protection for maybe 2 years now and so we assumed it was safe. Claw marks would suggest badger? We’ve also seen four of our newly planted cordon trees dug up and thrown across the field in the last month. We haven’t had any damage inside our fenced nursery however (phew!) or on the properly guarded trees, so I guess lesson learned - keep up the protection

This March we were lucky enough to spend a pretty stormy afternoon being all cosy inside whilst teaching locals how to graft their own fruit trees. Thanks to for making this workshop happen!

The Apple Jack planted in our library orchard is starting to shape up. It’s so satisfactory to see trees planted as whips turn into proper nicely shaped trees after a few years of growing and pruning. This particular variety is grafted off a tree in South Street Park, it’s got red flesh and those stunning dark pink flowers! 🌺
