We are officially ready to welcome you next week!

🤝Today marked a huge milestone for our new trauma-informed community group. We spent the day completing the training for our incredible volunteers, and . Their dedication, empathy, and heart for this work completely blew us away, and we are incredibly lucky to have them on this journey with us.

Healing and growth don’t happen in isolation—they happen in community. That is why we are so keen to start walking alongside our friends in the community next week, creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where everyone feels seen and heard.

Whether you are looking for a place to connect, seeking support, or simply want to be around people who understand, our doors are open to you.🗓️ We launch next week!

Use the QR code register and to find out our exact meeting times, location details, and how you can join us. We cannot wait to meet you.

This week is all about preparation and partnership.

We are meeting with family members and professionals involved in a child's life to build a fuller picture of their experiences and understand the impact of past trauma. These conversations are an important step in creating the right support, building trust, and ensuring we move forward together with the child's needs at the centre of every decision.

Collaboration, understanding, and a trauma-informed approach help lay the foundations for positive change and brighter outcomes.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers at The Family Works.

Your kindness, compassion, encouragement, and dedication make such a difference to the families, children, and young people we support every single day.

Whether you are giving your time, listening, supporting, encouraging, or simply showing up when it matters most — your impact is invaluable.

Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without you.

Thank you for being such an important part of The Family Works community and for helping us bring hope, support, and care to so many families. We appreciate every single one of you. 🙏

Humans are wired for connection — not just with each other, but with the natural world around us. This idea is known as biofilia: our innate need to connect with nature, the “greens and blues” of trees, parks, rivers, lakes, and open skies. 🌳🌊

For families and children living with stress, trauma, or emotional overwhelm, time in nature can be a gentle but powerful support for wellbeing. Research shows that being outdoors can help to:

✨ reduce stress and anxiety
✨ regulate emotions and calm the nervous system
✨ improve sleep and concentration
✨ encourage movement and physical health
✨ strengthen relationships through shared experiences
✨ create moments of safety, grounding, and connection

At The Family Works, we know healing doesn’t only happen in therapy rooms. Sometimes it begins with a walk through the woods, sitting beside water, feeling the sun on your face, or simply taking a breath in a green space together. 🌿

Trauma-informed support means understanding the importance of safety, connection, and regulation — and nature can offer all three in ways that feel accessible and nurturing for families of all ages.

This week, we encourage you to find a moment in the greens and blues:
🌳 take a family walk
🌼 sit in the garden
🌊 visit a local park or lake
☁️ pause and notice the sky

Small moments of connection with nature can make a big difference. 💚

This Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Week, we are reflecting on the importance of ensuring every family, child, and young person feels seen, valued, heard, and supported. ❤️

At The Family Works, we are committed to providing trauma-informed support that recognises the unique experiences, challenges, cultures, and identities of the families we work alongside. We believe that every person deserves dignity, respect, opportunity, and a safe space to grow and heal.

As a charity, we are passionate about creating inclusive and compassionate support where people are met without judgement, their voices are listened to, and their rights are upheld.

This week is an important reminder that equality, diversity, and human rights are not just principles — they are at the heart of building stronger families, healthier communities, and brighter futures.

A really encouraging morning today attending the BMBC Children & Young People’s Emotional Health & Wellbeing Board meeting. 💚

It was powerful to see professionals from statutory organisations, Barnsley Council, Barnsley Public Health and the VCSE sector coming together with a shared passion and commitment to improving the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people across Barnsley.

What stood out most was seeing real collaboration and positive change already happening in practice — with people genuinely listening, reflecting and working together to strengthen support for young people and families.

At The Family Works, we know how important relationship, connection and trauma-informed approaches are in helping children and young people feel safe, understood and supported, so it is a privilege to be part of these conversations and partnerships.

We are proud to be part of such an inspiring and committed network working together for the wellbeing and future of our children and young people. 💚

Feet on the ground, mind in the moment. Biophilia is our innate love of nature—the pull toward trees, sky, water, and wild places that helps us feel calm and connected. Green spaces (parks, forests) restore focus and lower stress, while blue spaces (rivers, lakes, sea) soothe and lift mood. Get out no matter the weather—sun, rain, or wind—your brain and body will thank you. One step outside can change the whole day.

We’re really looking forward to attending the South Yorkshire FASD and the Criminal Justice System Online Conference on Friday 5th June. 💚

This looks to be such an important and informative event, bringing together research, lived understanding and professional insight around the impact of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) within the criminal justice system.

At The Family Works, we know how important it is that trauma-informed and neurodevelopmentally-informed approaches are understood across all systems supporting children, young people and adults. Many individuals living with FASD remain undiagnosed or misunderstood, which can significantly impact behaviour, communication, vulnerability and access to justice.

The conference will explore:
✨ Recognising FASD within professional settings
✨ Vulnerabilities linked to FASD
✨ Harmful sexual behaviour and FASD
✨ How professionals can make reasonable adjustments and improve support
✨ Creating more equitable access to justice

A huge thank you to the organisers and speakers for creating space for these vital conversations and learning opportunities. Please book on via this link: https://www.safeguardingsheffieldchildren.org/events/event/south-yorkshire-fasd-and-the-criminal-justice-system-conference

This Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme is Take Action 💚

At The Family Works, we see every day how important relationships, trust, and talking are for supporting positive mental health. Feeling heard, safe, and connected can make a huge difference to someone’s wellbeing — especially for those who have experienced trauma.

As a trauma-informed family support charity, we take action every day to support the mental health of the children, young people, and families we work alongside. We also empower and encourage those we support to take action for themselves — whether that’s reaching out, building trusting relationships, speaking openly, or taking small steps towards healing and hope.

Mental health matters, and no one should have to face things alone.
