We have 2 subsidised, upcoming, online training courses for teachers/School staff.
De-escalating challenging behaviour : Tue 4th June 4-5pm
This session offers a simple technique you can use when someone comes to you with a serious accusation of challenging behaviour such as bullying, harassment, racial abuse, etc. AND the person’s emotions are very elevated.

When people feel threatened by others’ behaviours it can cause conflict. However, what might feel ‘threatening’ or ‘insulting’ or ‘racist’ to one person might not be for another. In school, you may often find yourself navigating different perceptions of an event, some of which could be serious and require further action. How can you find out what has happened, whether an event is serious (falling under school policy on bullying or equality, for example) AND bring down the intensity of people’s emotions such that they feel heard and safe?

The power of conflict - From conflict to communication: Tues 2nd July 4-5pm
Conflicts are inevitable in school and in life in general. But can they ever be a good thing? In this workshop we will explore the value of conflicts within schools and how to resolve them in a way that makes, as opposed to breaks, relationships (transforming classroom challenges into learning opportunities). The price of this training session is subsidised by CRESST (from charitable trusts and donations).

Sheffield Honours Primary School-Aged Conflict Resolution Experts

Tuesday 13th June saw the 15th annual Peer Mediators’ Conference, organised by the Sheffield conflict resolution education charity, CRESST.

Around 100 children who have been trained by CRESST as Peer Mediators came together at Sheffield Hallam University to take part in activities, games and the sharing of good practice relating to conflict resolution and the building of positive relationships in schools.

The children are between 9 and 11 years of age and volunteer their break and lunchtimes to mediate playground disputes between younger children in their school. They use non-judgemental questioning and listening techniques, encouraging the children to find solutions to their problems.

After the Lord Mayor’s opening welcome, they launched into workshops and discussion groups including cooperative games and a puppet-making workshop. The day finished with Maynard Flip Flap, a well-known Sheffield entertainer, as a way of thanking all the children for their voluntary efforts in resolving conflict through the year.

‘“It has helped us to understand conflict can be solved.
It makes you feel like a grown up.”
“It’s made it a safer place… if an argument starts it’s more likely to get sorted out quicker. And we’ve got better lessons because they aren’t taken up by teachers trying to sort out what happened at playtimes and dinnertimes.”

The charity was set up in 2004 with the support of a Quaker legacy and is now funded by lots of different charity trusts. We have trained 100 primary schools locally and regionally to develop young people’s skills in using constructive ways of resolving conflict. They are taught how to run a mediation and how to look for ‘win-win’ solutions that are likely to leave both parties happy and prevent the same dispute re-occurring.

A video of the event will be coming soon. In the meantime a video of a previous conference is available at: https://youtu.be/Vl825RzlU7w

We have a volunteering opportunity for our forthcoming Peer Mediator's Conference on June 13th . This will be a celebration of what the young people have learnt throughout the year. There will be 100 young people from Primary schools supported by our staff and school staff. There will be fun workshops, a visit from the Mayor, some keynote speakers and some entertainment. We are looking for 15 student volunteers who can help support the young people on the day. They would be required to lead people from one area to the next (using a floor plan), support young people in the workshops and be a friendly face.

This conference gives us hope that the next generation can resolve conflict peacefully and skilfully. There will be sessions from 9:30am including cooperative games, a conversation café, and workshops designed to challenge the young mediators.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact [email protected] and if you are a student you can apply through your volunteering portal here:
