New Waltham Academy Planet Protectors have earned the gold ‘Hedgehog Friendly Campus’ status!🏅

We’ve had a great year learning about hedgehogs, sharing what we’ve learned with others and trying to make our school a more friendly environment for hedgehogs to live in. 🦔

Hedgehog Heroes at Harrysmuir 🦔 🥇 🦸

Harrysmuir Primary has been awarded the Hedgehog Friendly Schools Gold Award for a fantastic fourth year running.

The Livingston school has been participating in the Hedgehog Friendly Schools Campus programme run by Students Organising For Sustainability (SOS) UK and partially funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).
To achieve the award Hedgehog Ambassadors, elected from each class, work together to complete hedgehog-friendly actions. Over the year they have carried out litter picks, hazard surveys and created a hedgehog haven by providing nesting sites, building log piles, minibeast hotels and ensuring there are hedgehog highways available.
The school also carried out fundraising for the Forth Hedgehog Hospital based in Rosyth and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
The whole school has embraced hedgehogs and the need to support them as they are now classed as vulnerable to extinction. The school’s HMIE report published in January of this year recognised how roles such as the Hedgehog Ambassadors helped to develop citizenship skills and knowledge about sustainability through these local conservation activities.
Mrs Carder and Miss Armstrong, the school’s Hedgehog Champions said: “We are very proud of the work all of our pupils and Hedgehog Ambassadors have done over the year to support hedgehogs, it shows how much they care for their local environment and wildlife, they are amazing!”
