We should all be receiving the new waste food recycling bin soon and I’ve seen loads of posts on Facebook about them so I’m sharing this in the hope it will clear some of the questions up
Food Waste Caddies – Your Questions Answered
There’s been a lot of discussion about the new food waste collections, so here are the key facts and clarifications which are hopefully beneficial to residents 👇
This scheme comes from national legislation introduced by the previous Conservative government, meaning all councils – (which starts week commencing 30th March) – must have a system in place by 1st April 2026. It is not something the council can opt out of.
⸻
❓ Why are food waste collections being introduced?
The aim is to create higher-quality material for energy production through aerobic decomposition.
When food is mixed with garden waste (which can contain fertilisers or w**d killer), the process slows down and becomes less efficient.
⸻
❗ Do I have to use the caddy?
✅ No. You are NOT required to use it.
If you don’t produce food waste – or simply choose not to use the service – that is absolutely fine.
✅ There is NO enforcement for not using it.
The only issue would be putting food waste in the wrong bin, which is the same rule that already applies to recycling.
⸻
🐀 What about rats and pests?
If food waste is already going into your general waste, using a different bin won’t increase the risk.
In fact:
• The outdoor caddies have secure catches
• They are emptied more frequently than black bins
This can actually help reduce problems.
⸻
💷 Is this being paid for by council tax?
No. The scheme is funded by DEFRA as part of a national rollout, and the money can only be used for this purpose – it cannot be diverted to things like potholes or other services.
⸻
🛍️ Do I need special bags?
✔️ Yes – compostable liners must be used if you are putting food waste in the caddy.
The small bags provided are to get you started indoors, not for the outside bin.
⸻
🏢 What about flats?
A separate collection system will be introduced and residents will be contacted directly with details.
⸻
🔄 Can I refuse or return the caddy?
You can’t opt out of receiving it, so the best option if you don’t plan to use it is to repurpose it around the home or garden.
SUMMARY ⤵️
✔️ No requirement to use it
✔️ No enforcement for non-use
✔️ Funded nationally, not by your council tax
