South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue SYESSR - Registered Charity Number 1068811 Last year we helped 107 dogs find a new family. We also provide support to a number of dogs on our foster scheme.

We aim to care for and re-home as many un-wanted, stray or neglected Springer Spaniels as we can as well as proving advice and support to current owners. Despite our title we willingly help other types of Spaniels plus cover a much larger geographical area and will not base decisions solely on the location of either a dog needing our assistance or a possible home for one of our current dogs. As we

ll as strays dogs come to us for reasons such as;

the "present" is too much trouble
a new baby arriving
their owners splitting up
they are too old to work
their owners working pattern changes
they have a behavioral problem
their owners move house or emigrate
they are found as a stray. or even a new puppy arrives (so the oldie has to go!)

There are many other reasons, too numerous to list but whatever the reason, we care for them and try and find them a suitable new home as soon as possible. Although this is a costly scheme we are very proud of it and it is something that not many rescues have. Dogs which are elderly or have a medical condition are often difficult to find homes for as people are worried about the financial commitment that may be needed. As part of our foster scheme these dogs will be found a permanent home but we will continue to provide financial assistance towards veterinary costs. We currently have around 30 dogs which are part of this scheme, which as you can imagine is a large drain on our funds. SYESSR believe that all Springers deserve to be given every chance to live their full life regardless of their age or disability. Only on veterinary advice and when quality of life is poor is euthanasia considered. This ethos is a costly one and means extra income has to be found to support these dogs.

Beautiful Brave Rosie had her operation last week and is doing wonderfully. The operation went to plan and she was on her feet very quickly afterwards, which everyone was suprised about (she obviously has a high pain threshold even for a Spaniel). She has spent the the last week on crate rest (which is very hard for a Spaniel) but the hard work is yet to come. She will be starting physio/hydrotherapy soon to build the muscles and strength up in her leg so that she can have a normal pain free life. Hopefully with a new family to call her own.

If you are a vet or vet nurse please do not comment on the xray descriptions, I know the names of body parts are not strictly accurate 😅😂

Our gorgeous Morris on his walk this morning with his kennel mate Charlie exploring in the woods. He's growing into such a handsome confident young boy, it's a pleasure to watch him enjoying himself. Hi, I'm Dexter one of the spaniels being cared for by the lovely people at SYESSR until I find my forever home. I was found wandering the streets, although I'm chipped no-one came forward to claim me. Like alot of my buddies in kennels I'm a lively lad with oodles of energy, so I enjoy my walks especially exploring the woods and playing fetch. One of my favourite times is swimming in the lake, unlike some of my buddies, I'm not interested in the feathered wildlife (not that they would ever catch them), so you don't have to worry about me getting stranded in the middle of it (it's so funny watching the humans shouting and waving after them to come back 🤣) I do get along with the other canine buddies, so if you already have a dog I'm sure we will get along fine. I was recently taken home by some lovely humans, I was a bit growly with them, so reluctantly they brought me back 😢 I can't explain why, but I'm sure with the right home I could overcome this. Back in November the very lovely
Jessie gave birth to healthy puppies.
4 of her babies,Chloe, Max, Mabel and Bella are all settled in lovely homes and it's great to receive photos and updates.
We still need to find homes for the remaining 3 puppies Bertie, Basil
and Morris.
They are lovely dogs who are waiting patiently for their people to find them.

ROSIE UPDATE

You might remember Rosie — she arrived with us just over a week ago in an awful condition. She’d been abandoned, unable to use one of her back legs, covered in matts, suffering with painful ears and teeth, and it’s clear she’s had many puppies in her past.

Thanks to Verity the groomer and Dot The Hollows Boarding Kennels , Rosie was gently clipped, bathed, and made comfortable before heading off to the The Vets At Dronfield for a full day of treatment. She received her vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, a dental (with several teeth removed), her ears flushed and medicated, and a complete set of X‑rays. The bill for this alone was over £1,500.

The X‑rays show her hip is dislocated and she has some spinal damage — likely caused by trauma (possibly a rta)— and because it’s been left untreated for so long, her hip can’t be put back in place. Her images were sent to a specialist, who has recommended a Femoral Head and Neck Excision. This surgery should allow her to walk again without pain, but it comes at an additional cost of £1,800+. This is being done on Monday.

Despite everything she’s endured, Rosie is the happiest, sweetest soul. She faced every bit of treatment with such bravery… as long as she had cuddles. These dogs amaze us every single day with their resilience 🧡

We do everything we can for dogs like Rosie, but we simply can’t do it without your support as the costs add up so quickly. If you’re able to help, even a little, it would mean the world.

All this hot weather is really hard on the rescue dogs, especially the oldies.

Our gorgeous grumpToby has poorly feet so finds going a walk hard at the best of times. What he does love though is to escape his kennel (funny, he can move pretty fast when making an escape 😆) and to find himself a shady spot to chill out and watch the world go by. This was him today, squashing all Dots plants and not caring even a little bit 💓

Our gorgeous LEO had his operation for his Total Ear Canal Ablation in back in March. We are pleased to report all went well and it doesn't seen to affect him at all, he's his usual self, an absolute dream to walk, doesn't pull, excellent off lead, likes a fussing on his terms, all the dog walkers love him, it's his favourite time. But we have another side to him 👹 whatever he had been through before first coming to us, has shaped his life with his attitude to people, he has to be sedated to be groomed and is not good with the vets either. He is still looking for a home with someone who has experience in handling aggressive dogs and willing to handle him on his terms. He seems happy living in the conservatory with other dogs while waiting for the perfect one to come along. More details on Leo are in the link in the comments, please read carefully before applying. 🐾 Meet Rosie 💔🐶

She arrived with us this week — the same day as Frank, but from a different stray kennels — and sadly her story is just as tough. She’d been abandoned, unable to use one of her back legs, covered in matts, and suffering with painful ears and teeth. She has also obviously had a lot of puppies.
