Well done team!

Research is a vital part of how we improve care and develop new treatments.

As the only Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) in the UK dedicated to delivering commercial trials treating children and young people, we were delighted to welcome colleagues from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Department of Health and Social Care to the Trust last week.

The visit was a fantastic opportunity to showcase all the progress we’ve made since launching on 1 April.

Through the CRDC, we will be able to offer more commercial clinical trials, giving children quicker access to new and potentially life-changing therapies.

With over 300 active research studies already happening at Sheffield Children’s, we’re proud to help shape healthier futures for young people.

🔦The FTIR uses light to measure the chemical composition of your skin

🔦Different molecules absorb different wavelengths of light - which give us a spectra and we can see which chemicals make up the skin (and how much of each)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a technique we use to image the skin layers and blood vessels.

For this a probe is gently held against your skin for 2-5 minutes. The probe shines a beam of harmless light into the skin.

OCT is a very useful technique to see, in real time and non-invasively, the tissue microstructure without exposure to ionising radiation 🔦

The C-Cube is a handheld camera that we use to take zoomed in pictures of your skin

The pictures can be taken in both 2D and 3D and take just a few seconds per image

Because all the pictures are so zoomed in - you cannot be identification by any of the images

We use pH probes to assess the acidity of skin. This probe is wet with water and sits on the surface of your skin.

The natural skin pH is generally in the acidic range but lots of different factors can affect skin pH.

Here at Sheffield Dermatology Research we use a number of non-invasive skin probes that tell us about the properties of your skin.

The Aquaflux measures the rate of water loss from your skin.

It tells us how well the skin barrier functions. The better the barrier function, the less water escapes over time and the lower the reading.
