Our youth theatres and projects provide a space for children and young people to develop the skills they are going to need to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our focus is to create theatre inspired by local, outdoor spaces (be it an urban landscape, ancient woodland, city park or rural countryside).

We are looking for a few people to take on this exciting role:

🎭 Youth Theatre Volunteer – support our creative sessions on Tuesday or Thursday evenings (term time), working alongside professional facilitators and gaining hands-on experience in theatre-making and outdoor skills.

The role is rewarding, creative, and a great way to develop your skills while making a difference.

We all know what a troll looks like. Big. Hairy. Grumpy. Probably not someone you'd want to invite to your birthday party. ☀️ In Norwegian stories, trolls can't survive sunlight; when the sun came up, trolls were turned to stone. Which might explain all those mysterious rocks and mountains… Or perhaps they're just very good at hiding. 👀

You might see a harpy.

In ancient Greek mythology, harpies were strange winged creatures with the body of a bird and the face of a woman. Their name comes from a Greek word connected with “sn**ching” or “seizing” — which gives you a pretty good idea of what they were known for. Harpies were said to swoop down from the sky and sn**ch things away. Not exactly the sort of creature you'd want stealing your picnic! 🥪

So if something suddenly swoops through the trees… Hold onto your sandwiches. 🌳🪽

We’re going to be asking questions like this — and much stranger ones — at Curious Creatures & Marvellous Monsters on 27 August in Ecclesall Woods.

Because when you step into a Growtheatre Family Adventure, there isn't always a right answer. We want children (and grown-ups!) to use their imaginations, get involved and see where the story takes them. So… what do you think your creature would be like? 👇

How about heading into the woods? 🌳🌿

On Thursday 27 August, Growtheatre is bringing Curious Creatures & Marvellous Monsters to Ecclesall Woods for a magical outdoor Family Adventure. Step into the shade of the ancient woodland and join Ivy, the Green Witch, as she tries to restore the magic that is disappearing from the woods. Families will:

🪄 Craft magical wands
🪨 Create Guardians of Green Magic
🐉 Build fantastic beasts — giant and miniature
🌿 Explore the woodland
🎭 Play games, use their imaginations and become part of the story
✨ Cast an ancient protection spell!
It's a great way to spend a summer morning or afternoon outdoors, away from screens and surrounded by nature. Suitable for families with children under 12.

There was SO MUCH JOY at our Summer Camp two weeks ago - we are missing seeing your wonderful young people every day!😊

Over three days we covered puppets, props, promenade, and pretty perfect characters (can I think of any more P words?!), combining them with Growtheatre's own outdoor theatre style. Thank you for coming along!
