A TA CAN CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF A LESSON WITHOUT EVER STANDING AT THE FRONT OF THE ROOM.
Because while the teacher is teaching, the TA is often spotting the bits that are starting to come apart.
👉 The child who has stopped following.
👉 The task that is pitched too high.
👉 The group that is drifting.
👉 The tension that is building.
Then comes the quiet adjustment.
A prompt.
A reworded instruction.
A quick check-in.
A bit of reassurance.
Small decisions that can keep a child learning, prevent behaviour escalating and allow the teacher to keep teaching.
From the outside, the lesson may still look exactly as planned.
It isn’t.
It is being constantly adjusted by the OTHER adult in the room.
That is why “the TA just supported” tells you almost nothing about what actually happened.
TA support can change access, understanding, behaviour and the whole flow of a lesson.
The TA is not leading from the front - but the IMPACT they have in the room is HUGE!
