Sheffield English Language Support - SAVTE

SAVTE aims to reduce social and economic isolation by providing individuals with life changing language skills.

SAVTE works to promote wellbeing and community cohesion by empowering individuals to develop their practical English language skills, therefore enabling them to become more connected citizens. This allows them to play a full part in the Sheffield community and allows them to progress to further training, education and employment. The volunteers who teach English are the backbone of our organisatio

n and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Teaching qualifications or knowledge of another language is not compulsory as training will be provided in the eight week SAVTE Tutor Training programme. The core of our service is one to one tuition which enables learners to develop language skills and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment. We also offer Local Learning Groups and Conversation English Groups which provide an opportunity for those who have benefited from home tuition to move on to a class environment. Learners will benefit from meeting and working with others, forming the basis of a support network that can be extended beyond the classroom and into the community.

🌟 Volunteers’ Week Spotlight – Anne 🌟

This week, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Anne as she finishes her final session at the Common Ground Conversation Group. 💙

Anne has been a dedicated volunteer with SAVTE for the past 3½ years, supporting learners both as a Conversation Group Volunteer and through 1-to-1 learning support. Throughout her time with SAVTE, she has made a huge difference to the lives of dozens of women through her kindness, patience, and encouragement.

To celebrate and thank Anne for her incredible contribution, Isabella and Kerry attended her final session on behalf of SAVTE.

Anne, thank you for everything you have given to the SAVTE community over the years. Your support, compassion, and dedication have meant so much to so many people, and you will be greatly missed by us all. ❤️

🌟 Volunteers’ Week Spotlight – Razia 🌟

Meet Razia, one of our amazing ESOL Class Assistant & CG Volunteers at SAVTE! 💙

Razia was inspired to volunteer because she understands the challenges people face when learning English and adapting to life in a new country. Through her kindness, encouragement, and positivity, she helps learners feel welcomed, supported, and more confident.

She deeply admires the courage and determination of people building a new life while learning a new language and adjusting to a different environment.

Razia also values the support she receives from Kerry, her link worker, who she describes as supportive, approachable, and always quick to respond to any questions or queries.

🌟 Volunteers’ Week Spotlight – Valerie 🌟

Valerie first discovered SAVTE at a FACES Fair in the Winter Gardens and was inspired to get involved after speaking with Katrin, SAVTE’s Administrator. 💙

After completing her volunteer training earlier in the year, Valerie joined SAVTE as a 1-to-1 Language Support Volunteer in September 2025.

Passionate about teaching, Valerie supports learners to improve their English, build confidence, and feel more connected within the community, especially women facing disadvantages.

For Valerie, volunteering is incredibly rewarding, particularly when she sees learners becoming more confident in their everyday lives and interactions.

🌟 Volunteers’ Week Spotlight – Danny 🌟

Danny first heard about SAVTE through a neighbour who had been volunteering for several years. Inspired by the work SAVTE does to support people facing challenging situations, he wanted to get involved and make a difference. 💙

Although he initially joined as a 1-to-1 learning support volunteer, Danny realised his strengths were best suited elsewhere. After spending 40 years working in IT, he now supports SAVTE as an IT Support Volunteer, using his valuable skills and experience to help the team.

Danny also serves on the Board of Trustees, a role he finds incredibly rewarding. He says it is a privilege to work alongside people who genuinely care about others and want the very best outcomes for them.
