SAVTE aims to reduce social and economic isolation by providing individuals with life changing language skills.

SAVTE works to promote wellbeing and community cohesion by empowering individuals to develop their practical English language skills, therefore enabling them to become more connected citizens. This allows them to play a full part in the Sheffield community and allows them to progress to further training, education and employment. The volunteers who teach English are the backbone of our organisation and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Teaching qualifications or knowledge of another language is not compulsory as training will be provided in the eight week SAVTE Tutor Training programme. If this sounds like something you'd be keen to do, or if you'd just like more information please visit our website with the link provided. In what different ways are our learners taught English? The core of our service is one to one tuition which enables learners to develop language skills and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment. We also offer Local Learning Groups and Conversation English Groups which provide an opportunity for those who have benefited from home tuition to move on to a class environment. Learners will benefit from meeting and working with others, forming the basis of a support network that can be extended beyond the classroom and into the community.

🌟 Our 1-to-1 Volunteer Training Course has begun! 🌟

We’re delighted to welcome 11 new volunteers who started their training last Wednesday. 🙌

By mid-November, they’ll be ready to support learners in their own homes, helping them build confidence, develop new skills and create new opportunities. 💛

We’re excited to see the difference they’ll make! 🌱

🌟 Two weeks into our new Conversation Group Volunteer Training Course! 🌟

We’re delighted to have an enthusiastic cohort of 15 new volunteers taking part in the training! 🙌

After October half term, they’ll be ready to take on new placements, helping SAVTE set up some much needed and long awaited new Conversation Groups. 💬❤️

Last week, we completed enrolment for our ESOL classes at Burngreave Library, Sheffield Cathedral and Sharrow Community Centre, as well as our Ready for Work class.

We’re looking for friendly, motivated volunteers to join our office team! Applications open today and close on Friday 25th September at 12:00pm ⏰.

🗓 When: From October 2026 to July 2027, every Thursday (school holidays excluded), 4 hours per week.

Who can apply?
We’re looking for volunteers who:
✅ Have English level Entry 3 or higher
✅ Have not worked in the UK before
✅ Speak English as a second language
✅ Have good computer skills
✅ Can commit to Thursdays, 4 hours a week, from October 2026 to July 2027 (school holidays excluded)

What you will do:
✨Assist with office administration tasks
✨Support our team with data entry, filing, and communication
✨Help with events and outreach activities
✨Learn new skills and contribute to a supportive community

🌟 Welcome to the SAVTE team, Rachael McGill! 🌟

We’re delighted to introduce Rachael, our new Finance and Operations Assistant.

Rachael brings a wealth of experience in organisational development, administration and coordination, particularly within the charity and voluntary sector. She’s also a writer and translator, with experience working across French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.

💛 Rachael is passionate about work that supports communities, improves people’s lives and helps reduce inequalities. She’s particularly passionate about welcoming, supporting and connecting people who have come to the UK from other places, making her a wonderful addition to the SAVTE team.

At SAVTE, Rachael works alongside Maymona to support the financial and administrative processes that keep our organisation running smoothly.
