❓What does it mean to live an ordinary life?

Vinesh Kumar's new essay challenges the idea that commissioning is just about buying care. Instead, it’s a public responsibility to create the conditions for everyone—especially those with learning disabilities and long-term mental health needs—to live with dignity, trust, and belonging. True citizenship is built on stability: lasting relationships, local judgement, and a supportive community. England’s current system doesn’t always protect these essentials.

It’s time to reimagine commissioning as stewardship—where those who hold public resources are accountable for enabling ordinary, meaningful lives for all.
