That whistle doesn't belong to a Premier League referee.

It belongs to a young person giving up their weekend to help others play the game.

They're learning.

They're building confidence.

They're making decisions under pressure.

And just like players, they're going to make mistakes.

The difference is that every mistake is heard by dozens of people on the touchline.

If we want more referees in grassroots football, we need to support the ones already stepping forward.

Because it's simple...

No referee.
No match.

It’s great to see the progression of Tom and the way he’s embraced the refereeing journey not letting neurodivergence be restricting.

🌟 Earlier this week, Rotherham Referees Association member Tom Halloway shared his inspiring refereeing journey with the BBC, discussing his experiences as an autistic referee and the opportunities the game has given him: https://tinyurl.com/mr26pjst

Law 8 clarifies that the ball is dropped for the team that would have retained/gained possession had play not been stopped, which includes the team that would have taken the restart in situations where the ball would have gone out of play.

If play is stopped because the ball makes contact with:
➡ a match official (e.g. the referee) or
➡ an outside agent
the ball is dropped where the interference/contact occurred

Players may wear non-dangerous accessories if they are safely and securely covered; dangerous items must be removed and not taped or covered. Match officials may also wear non-dangerous accessories in addition to the compulsory equipment.

EXPLANATION

The reference to ‘jewellery’ in the Laws was potentially confusing, as some of the items previously listed in Law 4 did not constitute jewellery. Furthermore, the banning of jewellery:
➡ created confrontation
➡ had been inconsistently applied
➡ overlooked cultural, religious, medical and personal reasons for wearing certain items

The focus is on non-dangerous ‘accessories’ being allowed if safely and securely covered, while dangerous items remain forbidden.

DECISION

If a player is wearing dangerous accessories, the referee must order the player to:
➡ remove the item
➡ leave the field of play at the next stoppage if the player is unable or unwilling to comply

A player who refuses to comply or wears the item again must be cautioned (yellow card).
