Hope for the Future

Hope for the Future We bring together local politicians and communities to take decisive action on climate change. Get in touch at [email protected]

Hope for the Future was born in summer 2013 when several Yorkshire Churches asked what on earth we could do to bring a greater sense of urgency about the biggest challenge of our time; climate change. In three years, the campaign has grown into a national organisation that promotes cross-party work on climate change, recognising the need for political consensus in order to combat the long-term cha

llenges presented by climate change. We use our findings from observations of MP-constituent engagements to train the general public how to effectively engage with their politicians, leading to a more inclusive, representative and collaborative way of approaching politics in the UK.

In honour of Volunteer Week, an annual campaign which celebrates the amazing contributions of volunteers in the UK, we caught up with volunteer Joakin Clary Niemi Junkola who provides an insight into his volunteer journey with Hope for the Future ๐Ÿ‘

From what inspired Joakin to volunteer in the first place to surprising insights into volunteering for a charity, Joakin provides an inside perspective on volunteering ๐Ÿ”

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œVolunteering has given me a closer look at how climate action is born and it has made me think more deeply about what more we need to achieve as a society to see meaningful climate action that results in progress [...] Volunteering is a great way to practice your skills in a professional environment whilst also meeting like-minded people who are already playing a part in making change happen as well.โ€

Want to know how to talk to your new councillor about air pollution, climate and nature? Come to next Monday's webinar!

Local elections have brought a wave of new councillors into office across the UK. It's the perfect moment to make contact, but knowing what to say and how to say it isn't always straightforward.

Next Monday, 8th June at 8pm, together with Hope for the Future, we're hosting a free online session on engaging with councillors about climate and nature as part of the "A Future for All" project.

The session will explore why it's important to engage, top tips in engaging with your councillor, and what to do if you disagree with them!

Practical, friendly, and free to attend.

Those who have the most to lose from a green transition are massively investing in influencing our politicians and our governments. Major oil companies are also pouring record levels of โ€˜donationsโ€™ into the mainstream political parties.

When local politicians see their communities coming together for good, for nature, for climate, for future generations, it builds the case for bolder action ๐Ÿ“ฃ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ‘‰ That is why one of the most powerful things you can do during Great Big Green Week (6 to 14 June) is invite your MP or local councillor.

We have helped to put together a practical guide with The Climate Coalition - with everything you need to get started, including inviting politicians to events, planning conversations and following up after.

28/05/2026

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) is an independent, statutory body established under the Climate Change Act 2008. Their purpose is to advise the UK and devolved governments on:

โšซ Emissions targets
โšซ Progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions
โšซ Preparing for and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

Last week they published their 'A Well Adapted UK Report' which "sets out a comprehensive package of solutions to address the growing impacts of climate change affecting every aspect of life in the UK."

We wanted to share our 5 key takeaways from the reportโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‘‰ We need to act now on adaptation, and it's up to all levels of government to deliver on the recommendations. Local governments will play a key role and they will need the public to demonstrate support for adaptation and hold them to account for delivery.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Adaptation requires a whole-of-society approach - it's critical that our national approach to adaptation includes everyone.

๐Ÿ‘‰ There is emphasis on the need to focus on equity in adaptation and their polling demonstrates that the public recognise the need to protect those most vulnerable and most impacted by climate change.

๐Ÿ‘‰ It reinforces the point that adaptation and mitigation are two sides of the same coin. We can't let the need to adapt to climate impact slow down progress and ambition on climate solutions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ When we're talking about adaptation and climate impacts we need to ensure we're continuing to emphasise the role that fossil fuels have in driving greater climate impacts.

Now that the elections have taken place, Hope for the Futureโ€™s Political Lead, Alfie Prothero, reflects on the achievements of the partnership and how we will be continuing to support Welsh constituents following the elections.
