Hope for the Future was born in summer 2013 when several Yorkshire Churches asked what on earth we could do to bring a greater sense of urgency about the biggest challenge of our time; climate change. In three years, the campaign has grown into a national organisation that promotes cross-party work on climate change, recognising the need for political consensus in order to combat the long-term challenges presented by climate change. We use our findings from observations of MP-constituent engagements to train the general public how to effectively engage with their politicians, leading to a more inclusive, representative and collaborative way of approaching politics in the UK.

Climate change represents the defining crisis of our time…

Our ‘A Future for All’ events are designed as a space for parents and children to talk about climate and nature issues in a beautiful woodland setting.

These events are shared spaces for people with similar passions for the environment to share hopes for the future of our planet and learn practical ways to truly make a difference through climate advocacy 💚

Through this project we hope to elevate the muffled voices of parents who represent a uniquely motivated yet underserved demographic in climate activism.

Our CEO Laura D'Henin joined Craig Bennett, Nikki Williams and Shaun Spiers at The Wild Summit, hosted by The Wildlife Trusts for a timely discussion: "Powerful voices are saying nature doesn't matter – this is how we fight back."

As political opposition to climate and nature action grows louder, how do we make sure the voices of communities aren't drowned out?

💬 While reflecting on the event, Laura said:

Two things that really stood out for me from the discussion...

👉 Firstly, misinformation doesn’t have to persuade the majority to be politically effective. It can be enough to make politicians believe the majority isn’t there.

When those of us who support action on climate and nature become quieter because the debate feels increasingly polarised, we leave a vacuum that louder, better-resourced voices can fill.

👉 Secondly, disengaging from politics doesn’t remove lobbying; it simply changes who gets heard. That’s a big part of why we’re developing our counterlobbying work at Hope for the Future: helping communities understand how political influence really works and equipping them to be persistent, trusted voices in the room.

We can’t outspend powerful vested interests. But communities have something money can’t manufacture: authentic stories, local relationships, lived experiences, and votes.

This morning the news was released that the controversial Jackdaw Gas Field project has been given the green light by the Energy Secretary.

Rosebank, which is another major North Sea oil and gas field project, is currently awaiting a decision. With the news of the approval of Jackdaw today, the government are watching to see the public response. Writing to your MP to urge the Government to reject Rosebank is more important than ever.

There is power in writing a short, personal email to your MP. We know that personalised emails, which include your postcode, are more likely to get noticed over mass mailing lists. A few lines about why, as a constituent, more fossil fuels concern you is a really powerful use of your time.

While the idea of contacting your MP might seem daunting, it is your MP’s job to listen to you as one of their constituents.

On our website we have step-by-step guides designed to support politician engagement and conversations on key climate and nature issues. You can use these to write a personalised email about your thoughts on the Rosebank project and potentially influence the outcome!

Our Citizen Assemblies project, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, brings people together to learn, deliberate and find common ground on complex issues.

👉 For the next phase of this project, we're searching for four climate assemblies, citizens' juries or other deliberative democracy projects where our support can help to turn recommendations into political engagement and action.

At Hope for the Future, we work alongside assembly organisers, facilitators and participants, bringing our expertise in constructive political engagement, tools and resources to bridge the gap between deliberation and political action.

Recently the Labour Party Conference returned to Liverpool, the hometown of Hope for the Future’s Chief Executive, Laura D’Henin.

Laura was joined by our Director of Policy and Engagement, Joel Silver, and Political Lead, Alfie Prothero, for several packed days of conversations with politicians, partners and others from across the climate, nature and democracy sectors.

👉 We came away optimistic, but with a renewed fire in our bellies to keep pushing for communities to be heard.

👉 With around 80% of people concerned about climate change, its relative absence from the main political narrative was noticeable, and only strengthened our determination to ensure people have a meaningful voice in shaping what comes next.

As part of Positive Imaginings's Family Climate Circus Activity Day, our Policy & Engagement Coordinator, Matthew Stellar, is running a Climate & Nature Workshop on how to make a tangible difference with decision-makers and how you can help shape the climate and nature policies that impact your daily life.

Alongside the workshop, enjoy a whole afternoon of free circus, forest activities, live music, nature crafts and more with Rea -Rowan Environmental Arts - there is something for the whole family!
