Hope for the Future

Hope for the Future We bring together local politicians and communities to take decisive action on climate change. Get in touch at [email protected]

Hope for the Future was born in summer 2013 when several Yorkshire Churches asked what on earth we could do to bring a greater sense of urgency about the biggest challenge of our time; climate change. In three years, the campaign has grown into a national organisation that promotes cross-party work on climate change, recognising the need for political consensus in order to combat the long-term cha

llenges presented by climate change. We use our findings from observations of MP-constituent engagements to train the general public how to effectively engage with their politicians, leading to a more inclusive, representative and collaborative way of approaching politics in the UK.

How do we make sure nature has a powerful voice in our politics? ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Attacks on nature protections are growing ๐Ÿ’” alongside narratives that pitch nature recovery against economic growth.

๐Ÿ‘‰ On the 9th September, our CEO Laura D'Henin-Ivers will join The Wildlife Trusts at the Wild Summit in Bristol to explore how we fight back, alongside fellow panelists Craig Bennett, Nikki Williams and Shaun Spiers.

At Hope for the Future, we know that facts alone rarely change political narratives. We need people and communities who feel confident challenging misinformation, telling a different story and building relationships with decision-makers that create lasting political support for climate and nature.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re developing new work to help communities recognise and respond to misinformation โ€“ and make sure politicians are hearing informed, powerful voices from the people they represent.

We believe political engagement works best when it's built on common ground and relationships, not one-off asks.

๐Ÿ‘‰ When Sarah wanted to raise repair and reuse with her MP, Tulip Siddiq, Hope for the Future helped her root the conversation in something local, the Camden Fixing Factories she runs.

The support gave Sarah the confidence to invite Tulip to visit, and the relationship has since grown into a national policy pledge and an ongoing dialogue in Parliament ๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿงญ๐ŸŒ August isn't the busiest of months for politics. So we took the time to reflect on what the new government's agenda on climate action could look like in the coming months, as well as the record-breaking weather events that have affected us all.

๐Ÿ“ข Itโ€™s time for a new climate politics, and constituents have a powerful role to play in creating it.

After another summer of extreme heat, drought and wildfires, the need for political leadership on climate and nature is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Last week, Pippa Heylings and Ed Davey have written to the Prime Minister calling for a cross-party meeting on climate and nature.

At Hope for the Future, we know that political leadership is strengthened when decision-makers hear clearly from the communities they represent. MPs need to know that their constituents want climate and nature to remain a political priority, and that there is public backing for politicians to work across party lines to find solutions.

So this is an opportunity to use your voice.

Write to your MP. Tell them why climate and nature matter in your community, and encourage them to get behind the call for renewed, cross-party political leadership.

A new climate politics wonโ€™t just be built in Westminster, it will be built through conversations between communities and the people who represent them.

Ahead of the Greater Manchester Mayoral election which was held in July, we were proud to support Lancashire Wildlife Trust with the Big Green Hustings, helping local community groups to shape the conversation on climate, nature and the future of the region.

In the run-up to the event, we worked with community organisations to develop powerful, constructive questions that reflected the issues people care about most โ€“ from protecting nature and preparing for extreme weather, to creating healthier, greener neighbourhoods.

The event provided an important opportunity to discuss the environmental challenges facing Greater Manchester and the role of the Mayor in tackling them. It also demonstrated why community voices matter: when people are equipped to ask informed, evidence-based questions, politicians are held to account.
