The Friends of Sheffield Cathedral

The Friends of Sheffield Cathedral The Friends of Sheffield Cathedral was founded in 1997. The parish church became the Cathedral of the new Diocese of Sheffield in 1914.

Our purpose is to support the ministry and mission of the Cathedral,
to preserve and enhance the building and its arts,
and to raise awareness of the Cathedral, South Yorkshire and beyond. About Sheffield Cathedral
Like the cathedrals in many of England’s great cities, the Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul has for most of its life been a parish church. Although there was a Norman church h

ere, the present church dates largely from the 15th Century, and is Sheffield’s principal medieval building, though it has been altered and extended many times in its history, including the present century. Sheffield’s rapid expansion as a result of the Industrial Revolution led to its being designated a city in 1893. It is the mother church of an area roughly corresponding to the county of South Yorkshire. As a small cathedral, our building has a special charm that endears itself to many people. It has, perhaps, a jewel-like quality at the heart of a tough, busy, industrial and commercial centre. In line with our aims, recent contributions and achievements made as a result of the Friends group include:
Provision of a donations box for visitors in the Cathedral entrance
Support to Parish pilgrimages
Commission of silk banners to be used at major services
Sponsorship of concerts at the Cathedral
to produce a Cathedral Guide Book
Supporting the redesign of the website (2010)
funding towards the Sheffield Nativity
Supporting the Sam Hiller memorial concert
