💙Depression Awareness Month💙

October is depression awareness month. Depression can make you feel like there’s nowhere to turn. There is.

Talk to someone. Speak to your GP. Reach out. Get support. Take the first step — however small.

You don’t have to face it alone. 💙

WORLD SU***DE PREVENTION DAY | 10 SEPTEMBER

We’ve seen the person walk through the gym doors with a smile on their face, gloves on their hands and a head full of noise nobody else knows about.

We’ve seen people come in struggling.

We’ve seen people say, “I’m fine.”

And sometimes, they’re anything but.

The truth is, you don’t always know who is fighting a battle behind closed doors.

That’s why we need to talk.

Not just today.
Every day.

Ask your mate how he’s really doing.
Check in on your family.
Sit with someone who’s struggling.
Listen without trying to fix everything.

And if you’re the one struggling, hear this:

You don’t have to fight it alone.

There is no weakness in saying “I’m not okay.”

There is no shame in asking for help.

And there is absolutely no shame in needing someone in your corner.

At Mentalmate, boxing is only part of what we do.

We create a place where people can walk through the door, put the gloves on, have a chat, let some of the pressure out — and know that they matter.

Safe space. Real conversations.

So today, don’t just scroll past this.

Send the message.
Make the call.
Ask the question.
Start the conversation.

Because sometimes one conversation really can change someone’s life.

🥊 Keep fighting. Keep talking. Keep showing up.

If you need someone right now:

📞 Samaritans — 116 123
💬 Shout — text SHOUT to 85258

If you think someone is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E.

Why Mentalmate?

* Mental health comes before boxing. Boxing is the vehicle, not the end goal. Sessions are designed to improve both physical and mental wellbeing, with no pressure to talk, but plenty of opportunity if someone wants to.

* Completely free. Unlike most boxing gyms, all regular classes are free to attend. The charity is volunteer-run and relies on donations and fundraising so cost isn’t a barrier to support.

* A true safe space. Members don’t need a diagnosis, referral or previous boxing experience. People of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels are welcomed, with confidentiality and mutual respect being core values.

* No experience required. Whether someone has never worn boxing gloves or has trained before, sessions are adapted so everyone can take part together.

* Lived experience, not just coaching. The charity was founded after the founder experienced their own mental health struggles and discovered how much boxing helped. That personal understanding shapes the culture of the gym.

* Community. While members learn boxing and improve fitness, the emphasis is on belonging, supporting one another and building friendships.

* Volunteer-led charity. All volunteers started by attending Mentalmate and have now progressed to coaching the classes. Every donation goes back into providing free sessions, equipment and expanding support rather than generating profit.

🚨Our 6th Birthday🚨

Six years ago, Mentalmate started with a simple belief: no one should have to struggle with their mental health alone.

In the beginning, it was small.
Just one class a week and one volunteer who believed in the mission.

There was no roadmap — just a commitment to create a safe space where people could talk openly, feel supported, and know they weren’t alone.

Six years later, that small start has grown into six classes every week and an incredible team of nine dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy, and compassion to support others.

What makes us proud isn’t just the growth in numbers — it’s the impact behind them. Every class, every conversation, and every person who walks through the door reminds us why Mentalmate exists.

Mentalmate was never just about running sessions. It’s about building a community where mental health is understood, where stigma is challenged, and where people feel safe to be human.

To every volunteer, every participant, and everyone who has supported Mentalmate over the past six years — thank you. You’ve helped turn a simple idea into something meaningful.

From 1 class to 6.
From 1 volunteer to 9.
From an idea to a growing community.

Six years in, and we’re just getting started.
