🌸Spring Highlights from a Recent Garden Tour

On a glorious sunny day, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Hardy Plant Society for a guided tour of the Botanical Gardens.

We explored some of our “Plants of the Month” for March and April, starting with Chaenomeles speciosa in front of the South Lodge. Planted in 2003, it provides an important early source of food for pollinators, and later in the year its fruit can be used for making pectin-rich jams.

We also admired Forsythia ‘Maree D’Or’, a compact, ground-covering variety, ideal for smaller gardens.

In the Marnock Garden, we saw Pulsatilla vulgaris (Pasque Flower), a beautiful yet vulnerable species listed on the Red Data List.

Ribes sanguineum ‘White Icicle’ is still flowering in the Four Seasons Garden, offering a delicate display, while Ercilla volubilis, a charming Chilean vine planted in 2004, can be found climbing the wall behind the Pavilions.

Our April Plant of the Month, Magnolia ‘Leonard Messel’, was also a highlight of the tour.

Along the way, we enjoyed spotting many other plants coming into their own this spring, there’s always something new to discover in the gardens 🌿

Spring in the gardens 🌸

There’s something about this time of year that brings a quiet sense of renewal, and the magnolias capture it beautifully as one of spring’s most iconic blooms. Their soft colours and fleeting flowers feel like a gentle welcome into the season…

Even if only for a short while, magnolias mark the turning of the season, and at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, they’re always a joy to come across. 🌸
