Saffron Sheffield - Sheffield Women's Counselling and Therapy Service

Saffron Sheffield - Sheffield Women's Counselling and Therapy Service We continue to receive a high volume of clients who are signposted from other counselling charities, community mental health teams, social workers and GPs.

Saffron Sheffield changes lives by providing free, confidential counselling, psychotherapy & group support to women in Sheffield who are survivors of abuse & trauma. Sheffield Women's Counselling and Therapy Service (SWCTS) was established in 1988 by a small group of volunteers who were concerned about the lack of accessible and affordable therapy services for women in Sheffield, particularly wome

n who had experienced sexual abuse. Over the decades we have developed as a specialist provider of trauma therapy, hosting trauma-focused training events and supporting volunteer therapists to develop their skills in working with complex trauma. In recent years public awareness of abuse has grown, the stigma around mental health issues has decreased, and high profile institutional abuse cases have hit the headlines. It is clear that we are in an era of disclosure, where increasing numbers of survivors are reaching out for help to deal with the abuse and trauma that has often had a devastating impact on their lives. Together with your support we can help women survivors to process their experiences and discover that there is life beyond trauma. Thank you for your support

On Monday, we were delighted to attend The Cutlers' Charitable Trust Presentation, celebrating the incredible work of charities and community organisations across Sheffield.

It was a lovely way to start the week, hearing about the inspiring and uplifting work being carried out by so many charities making a difference across our communities.

A huge thank you to The Company of Cutlers The Company of Cutlers' Charitable Trust and The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire for their continued support of Saffron Sheffield. Their generous funding helps us provide free, specialist trauma therapy for women who have experienced trauma and abuse, giving survivors the opportunity to process their experiences, rebuild their lives and move beyond surviving.

We're proud to be part of such a strong voluntary sector and grateful to The Cutlers for their continued investment in charities supporting people across Sheffield.

Thank you for a wonderful event, and for your ongoing support of Saffron Sheffield.

It's Small Charity Week.

Small charities play an important role in our communities. They provide specialist services, build trusted relationships and often fill gaps that might otherwise go unmet.

For nearly 40 years, Saffron has provided specialist therapy and wellbeing services for women affected by trauma in Sheffield. We know that recovery takes time, trust and specialist expertise, and we are proud to offer a service that helps women move beyond surviving and towards recovery.

This week, we are celebrating the contribution of small charities across Sheffield and beyond. Every day, small charities make a difference to the lives of individuals, families and communities, often with limited resources but enormous commitment.

We would also like to thank our staff, therapists, volunteers, funders and partners who help make Saffron's work possible.

We’re sharing the Five Ways to Wellbeing this World Wellbeing Week, a simple, evidence-based framework to help support mental health and wellbeing every day.
Across this week, we’ll explore all five ways:
💛 Connect
💛 Be Active
💛 Take Notice
💛 Learn
💛 Give
Up today: Get Active💛

Getting active looks different for everyone. It doesn’t have to mean intense exercise, there are small, meaningful things that can help you reconnect with yourself and the world around you.

Doing something social, going for a short walk, stretching, gardening, cleaning, crafting, or spending time outdoors all count. The important thing is doing something that makes you feel good.

Rest and downtime matter too, but sometimes stepping away from scrolling or watching TV and gently engaging in an activity can help boost your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and support your wellbeing.

🌿 Today is the start of World Wellbeing Week, 24th–30th June.

We’re sharing the Five Ways to Wellbeing, a simple accessible framework to help everyone support mental health and wellbeing every day.

Across this week, we’ll explore all five ways:

💛 Connect
💛 Be Active
💛 Take Notice
💛 Keep learning
💛 Give

Follow us throughout the week as we break each one down and share practical ways you can bring them into your everyday life.

First up: Connect 💛

Building strong relationships with the people around us, like our family, friends, colleagues, and our wider community, can help us feel happier, more supported, and less alone. Even small moments of connection can make a big difference.

It doesn’t have to be a group activity. You could simply call or message a friend, check in on someone you haven’t spoken to for a while, or arrange a short catch-up over a coffee or walk.

You can also explore local connections in Sheffield by joining a community Facebook group for your area, finding local activities via Meetup Sheffield, or volunteering through the Sheffield Volunteering Hub.

What's important is finding the right level of connection for you.

Over the last couple of weeks, members of Saffron Forge, our lived experience group, came together for our first ambassador workshop.

There were huge insights, a lot of laughter, a couple of tears and so much passion for helping other women.

Together, we explored what it means to be a Saffron ambassador, the messages we want people to remember about our work, and the many different ways women can use their experiences and insights to help others understand the impact of trauma and the possibility of recovery.

One thing that stood out above everything else was the generosity in the room. Women spoke about wanting others to know that recovery is possible, that specialist support matters and that no one should have to face the impact of trauma alone.

This is just the beginning.

Our next steps will focus on building confidence to share stories and insights safely, finding the ways each person wants to contribute and continuing to shape Saffron through the voices of women with lived experience.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part for your honesty, wisdom, courage and commitment to helping other women. If you weren't able to join us this time, don't worry—there will be more opportunities to take part in future ambassador workshops.

We can't wait to see where this journey takes us.

Women who have experienced trauma or abuse can often feel alone in their experiences. Therapy can provide a safe, supportive space to talk openly, feel heard, and reconnect.

After having therapy with us, 78% of women say they feel less isolated. When loneliness and isolation feel overwhelming, having someone to listen without judgement can make a real difference.

During Loneliness Awareness Week, we’re reminding everyone that connection matters, and that reaching out for support can be the first step towards feeling less alone.

We're proud to support and help give loneliness a voice.

You don't have to be alone to feel lonely. Loneliness can affect anyone, at any stage of life.

For people who have experienced trauma, loneliness can be especially common. Some may withdraw to protect themselves from further hurt, feel emotionally exhausted by social situations, or struggle with feeling disconnected from others.

While isolation can feel safer in the short term, over time it can reinforce feelings of loneliness and make it harder to find connection, understanding and support.

That's why conversations matter.

By talking openly about loneliness, we remind people that they're not alone in how they feel. Sometimes the first step is simply being able to say "I'm feeling lonely" and knowing that someone will listen. 💜

When you've experienced trauma or abuse, putting your own needs first can feel impossible. Therapy can help give women the tools to reconnect with themselves, and advocate for what they need and deserve.

Taylor, 41, who was offered 30 sessions*, said “Thank you for all the help and support, I feel much more equipped to deal with things now. I feel I can advocate more for my own health needs and have more confidence to do this.”

🎉We did it! 🎉

Our small but mighty team at Saffron alongside the fabulous team at Gripple Limited have completed an incredible 2,394 miles between us for our Beyond Your Comfort Zone campaign – the equivalent distance from Sheffield to Crete. We've raised a total of £540!

A huge thank you to everyone who donated! Every mile completed and every donation received brings us closer to supporting more women in Sheffield with access to life-changing therapy.

Along the way, our team took on personal challenges, showed remarkable determination, and helped raise awareness of the need for accessible therapy for women.

🏅Our Senior Therapist, Josie, covered an amazing 83.2 miles across the Lake District.

🏅One of our therapists took on the Sheffield Half Marathon, completing the gruelling 13.1 miles in 2 hours 18 minutes.

We'd also like to thank for supporting Saffron by joining the challenge with a fantastic 500-mile pledge.

Thank you to everyone who walked, ran, cycled, donated, shared our campaign, and cheered us on. We couldn't have done it without you!

You can still share and support our challenge here, or find out how to start your own!
