HELLO, MUSHROOM ENTHUSIASTS!
This is the official page for University of Sheffield Mycology Society, which is not yet, in itself, official- the application is being filled in as we speak. We hope to bring mycology to the masses, providing a space to share mycological research, books, and findings, as well as venturing out around Sheffield and perhaps further in search of fungi to identify and admire!
Before we can become a fully-fledged society, we need a committee! The roles that need filling are as follows
President: Responsible for calling and chairing meetings, taking responsibility for members and activities, and being the spokesperson for the society.
Operations Officer: Responsible for most administrative duties pertaining to the group, including taking minutes at meetings, submitting risk assessments, and organising the AGM/EGM.
Finance and Development Officer: Responsible for handling the money, understanding the SU financial systems, keeping track of income and outgoings, and if applicable, applying for funding and doing fundraising. (Note: We're unlikely to have many expensive projects, and don't intend to charge membership fees, at least for the first year.)
These three roles must all be filled by different people. I myself (Solomon Garland) am happy to fill any one of them, depending on what other people are interested in doing.
Additionally, we need an inclusions officer, who can be one of the above officers, or a different person. They are responsible for ensuring that everything we do as a society is non-discriminatory, and for making sure every student feels included. This includes being a confidential contact for members and potential members, ensuring meetings and events are as accessible as possible, and uploading an accessibility statement onto our website.
More details on the specific requirements for each role can be found at https://su.sheffield.ac.uk/activities/society-support/overview-of-society-positions
I really hope we can get these roles filled, because I think this society would be a great addition to our fine university, and inspire many students to learn more about this fascinating field. On top of that, being on the committee of a scientific interest society will look fantastic on your CV, as well as being fun and rewarding! If you're interested in a committee role, comment on this post, message the page, message me, ask a friend to ask me, send an email or a pigeon, just get in touch and we'll get things rolling!
Thanks for reading!
