Breaking the stigma
Campaigning for & creating change
Creators of the UK's biggest ***deprevention initiative

Seventeen people die by su***de every day in the UK - it is the biggest killer of men and women under 35 in the UK.. More people die by su***de than in road traffic accidents, cancer. Most su***des are preventable right up until the last moment. Together we can reduce the stigma, and get better at asking questions, listening, and directing people to the right help. Together we can save lives. At t

he end of June 2022, the BatonOfHopeUK was announced on BBC Breakfast News https://youtu.be/lvBLJipSdj0 as the UK’s biggest ever su***de awareness and prevention initiative, touring all 4 nations between June 25th and July 8th 2023. Between now and next summer's tour of the Baton, we are looking to speak with individuals and organisations to act as ambassadors, regional champions, national partners and supporters for the 2023. The BatonOfHopeUK is a not-for-profit organisation. Its primary purpose is to help us move toward a zero su***de society by opening up the conversation and raising awareness and encouraging appropriate action. One of the world’s top trophy designers (and goldsmiths to the Queen), Thomas Lyte, has agreed to design and create a baton that will travel the length and breadth of the UK. Our aim is to seek to change the conversation around su***de, smash the stigma, highlight existing support and leave a lasting legacy of practical improvements in the field of su***de prevention. Do you share our vision and ambition? Would you like to be an important part of the ? Could you help spread the word or perhaps help coordinate regional activities? Are there other ways you’re already thinking about, where you could help us make this the nation’s biggest su***de prevention campaign ever? Do you have particular skills, knowledge, contacts, etc that you think might be especially relevant? Together we can bring about real change. During the next few months, we will be holding a series of presentations, outlining our plans and sending out invitations to those who would like to take part. If you would like to contribute in any way to what we are planning to be the UK's biggest ever su***de awareness and prevention initiative, please visit https://www.batonofhopeuk.org/ and the Register Interest menu option.

Hear from our former Project Leads: Marie Greenhalgh - Basingstoke - 2025 Tour 💙

We are just two days away until applications close for location bids for our 2027 Tour. Please make sure you submit your application by this Sunday 31st May on the online form on this website page: https://f.mtr.cool/kumonoqbhh

Here's Marie's experience from our Tour last year...

"Being part of one of the Tours was a deeply moving and meaningful experience. There was a real sense that we were part of something bigger, creating space for conversations that can quite literally save lives. The openness, honesty and courage people brought was incredibly powerful.

"You could feel how much it mattered to everyone there, and how important it is to break the silence and stigma that so often surrounds su***de. Hearing lived experiences and seeing people connect so openly reinforced just how vital it is to create spaces where people feel safe to talk, to listen, and to realise they are not alone.

"Personally, I learned a huge amount through being involved. I came away not just inspired, but changed, with a greater sense of responsibility and confidence to keep these conversations going and support others in a more meaningful way.

"What stood out most was the sense of collective care and responsibility. It didn’t feel like a one-off event, it felt like the start of something ongoing, relationships, conversations, and actions that can contribute to real change in our communities.

"I would wholeheartedly encourage anyone thinking about hosting a location to get involved. Hosting a Tour is not just about being a stop, it’s about being part of a movement that is working to give hope, reduce stigma, and ultimately save lives."

Hear from our former Project Leads: Farzana Khanum - North Lincolnshire- 2025 Tour 💙

Before we share her story, for those wanting to submit location bid applications for our 2027 Tour, please make sure you do so by this Sunday 31st May on the online form on this website page: https://f.mtr.cool/zymatpdqpa

Farzana, Su***de Prevention Lead at North Lincolnshire Council, reflects on her time as a Project Lead for last year's Tour...

"Being Project Lead for The Baton of Hope 2025 Tour in North Lincolnshire was one of the most meaningful experiences of my career. At times it was incredibly emotional, hearing so many powerful lived experience stories of loss, hope, resilience and recovery but it was absolutely worthwhile. It was far more than organising an event it was about creating a moment for our communities to come together, stand united, and say clearly that su***de prevention and mental health matter.

"Su***de is often a very difficult subject to talk about, but the Tour created a space where those conversations about su***de, mental health, grief, and hope could happen with honesty, compassion, and understanding. It gave us a unique opportunity to break down stigma, amplify lived experience voices, and open up conversations in a way that felt visible, human, and deeply meaningful.

"Seeing individuals, families, organisations, partners, community leaders, volunteers and Baton Bearers come together with a shared purpose was incredibly moving. Very quickly, it felt like we became one family supporting one another, sharing stories, and united by a common purpose to inspire hope, challenge stigma, and create change. The Baton itself became such a powerful symbol of shared responsibility. For many Baton Bearers, carrying it publicly was an act of remembrance, courage, and healing. For our communities, it gave visible permission to talk openly about su***de, grief, and hope.

"In North Lincolnshire, the impact was incredible: more than 1,000 participants across nine locations, over 100 Baton Bearers, more than 50 lived experience stories shared, strong volunteer engagement, significant public awareness activity and meaningful workplace commitment through The Baton of Hope Workplace Pledge.

"Our MP, Lee Pitcher, joined us as a Baton Bearer and shared a message that captured exactly what the Tour stood for: “We hear you, we see you, and we want to be here for you. You are never alone.”

"The lasting impact of the Tour lies in what it changed stronger community connections, greater confidence to have difficult conversations, deeper organisational commitment, and a shared understanding that su***de prevention is everyone’s responsibility. I will always be incredibly proud of what North Lincolnshire achieved through the Baton of Hope. If I was asked to do it all again, I would do it in a heartbeat. It was an unforgettable experience and a real opportunity to create lasting impact, raise awareness, and inspire hope."

Hear from our former Project Leads: Sara Downs - Sheffield - 2023 Tour 💙

In the run-up to our location bid applications deadline for our 2027 Tour, we'll be sharing the thoughts of former Project Leads who have hosted previous parts of our Tours in their home town or city. First up is Sara from Sheffield, who was involved in our first Tour...

"I was extremely proud to be a Project Lead for Sheffield on the first Tour in 2023 with my sister, Claire. The Tour stop allowed us to reach out and touch so many people who had been affected by su***de and we all came together in the City as one voice. I will treasure the memories of that day forever so if you are thinking about applying for the 2027 Tour for your city go for it and help raise much needed awareness."
