🕯️ June 4th Vigil in Sheffield – Thank You 🕯️

Thanks everyone who joined us on June 4th in Sheffield to remember, to gather, and to stand together.

At 5pm, just as the choir performance "Lamenting Voices" began, the rain poured heavily — yet it only deepened the moment. It echoed the songs we sang: in the wind of change, carrying memory, sorrow, and hope through the storm. We are deeply grateful to everyone who stopped by, and especially to those who remained throughout the 6.4 vigil and commemoration ceremony. Your presence keeps the truth alive.

A heartfelt thank you to Cllr Joe Otten and Cllr Douglas Johnson for joining us in solidarity. Also, thanks

- to Sheffield Amnesty International's support and its chairperson Josh Cheesman who, together with our Re-Water teammate, Ming, read out Chow Hang Tung’s letter.

- to our guest speaker, Ukrainian activist Ayman Eckford, for reminding us of the shared struggle for freedom and resilience.
As the Tiananmen Mothers have said: we will not forget what happened on June 4, 1989. We know the CCP must be held accountable.

While it is painful that Hongkongers can no longer hold the June 4th vigil at Victoria Park, we are grateful that those of us in the diaspora can continue to remember and resist. Stand with Hong Kong. Fight for freedom. One day, Hong Kong will be free.

歌: do you hear the people sing +人民之歌+ 試問誰還未發聲

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of the people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

Wind of change

The world is closing in
And did you ever think?
That we could be so close?
Like brothers
The future's in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change
The wind of change blows straight
Into the face of time
Like a storm wind that will ring
The freedom bell for peace of mind
Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to sing
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

I told them we heard singing first before we reached the square
"Arise the wretched of the earth" filled the air
So many fists clenched to the sky we couldn't count them all
But then the sea of weeping washed over the hall
I told them no one saw me, there was no one who would know
I was an army soldier dressed in students clothes
Between the smoking bonfires we held our rifles high
As the ashes of the banners soared into the sky
Ah, I was seventeen that spring
Ah, we were just obeying orders
Ah, I still see everything
Through the factory's yellow windows
In the dirty stinking river
In the messages that find you then vanish in the ether
They vanish in the ether:
I told them not to fear me but history tells the tale
The artists and the poets fill up every jail
Before I held a rifle I held an artist's brush
Before Tiananmen I even dreamed of love

Sound of silence

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell

And echoed in the wells of silence

Woah-hoah
Woah-hoah

Remember June 4

No Candles in Victoria Park,
After thirty years of lighting the dark,
The poison cloud from China has spread,
To once free Hong Kong, where democracy’s dead.
*Remember June 4,Remember June 4,You want us to forget,But we remember June 4.

No flames recall the students songs,
In freedom gathered 10,000 strong,
Single souls with candle lights,
Burning freedom, into the night.
*Remember June 4,Remember June 4,You want us to forget,But we remember June 4.

The bodies in the tower’s frame,
Destroyed by police, to hide China’s shame,
But the pillar lives in a million hearts,
The shame still screams, though torn apart.
*Remember June 4,Remember June 4,You want us to forget,But we remember June 4.

The heroes of Tiananmen square,
Who cried out freedom and democracy there,
Were slaughtered by the thousand that day,
Their memories can’t be hidden away.
*Remember June 4,Remember June 4,You want us to forget,But we remember June 4.

In 1989, the democratic movement at Tiananmen Square left a lasting impact on a generation of Hongkongers. The ideals of democracy—fought for with courage and paid for with blood—found their way into HongKongers' hearts.

“8964”--Tiananmen Square Massacre -- became an important cultural symbol. “June 4th” came to represent the regime’s massacre of its own people. Take control of everything even you are not their people. We will take to the streets to mourn and to send a clear warning to the world: the June 4th crackdown has never truly stopped. The executioner’s regime is still advancing—its long arm still reaching. "The Big Brother is watching YOU‼️"

Come together with us. Sing with us—stay vigilant, and be careful.
