An Amazing Journey!
The SLR Greenway project team, along with additional Sheppey residents, have just completed a winter path section along Power Station Road.

This initiative builds on previously cleared areas, transforming a once boggy and difficult-to-navigate stretch of grass into an accessible path.

Over the weekend, approximately 60 tons of planning material were utilised, thanks to machinery provided by local businesses. With this work, access can now be enjoyed year-round.

In just over a day and a half, our dedicated team and local residents constructed an 80-meter section of the path. This included the installation of a staggered stationary barrier designed to manage access while restricting entry for quad bikes and electric scooters.

Many residents have raised concerns about the increasing use of these vehicles on the paths, which poses safety risks for pedestrians. To help address this, additional posts will be installed at various points along the route in the near future.

The project continues to garner significant support across Sheppey, promoting a safe and natural route for residents and children while also attracting walkers and cyclists from beyond the island.

In homage to our historic light railway, the group plans to create signs to express gratitude to the landowners for their support, as well as to highlight important landmarks, including the locations of the former railway stations.

This is a community-driven project, supported and carried out by the people of Sheppey, for the benefit of all!

The journey continues!
SLR Greenway volunteers have cleared this weekend the last section of the original light railway route from Scrapesgate Road to Power Station Road. It opens up access now to around 135m of safe and beautiful walkway. The natural track surface has been widened and levelled but still remains presently as an ash/dirt track and will get wet and muddy in places.
We have cut back the overgrowth of brambles whilst maintaining all the existing hawthorns by removing fallen and dead branches that maintains the routes natural beauty and encourages regrowth in the years to come.
In time we will plan to raise funds and support to have a suitable surface for all users.
We hope that we will continue to gather support and help from all residents, council and businesses to continue to develop this safe and accessible route for everyone to enjoy. We have been made aware the need to install access control measures at route entrances to ensure motor vehicles do not use the track and this we plan to do in the near future.
Once more a big thank you to Rapid Tool Hire for their free supply of a digger for the weekends work.
Many have asked how they can get involved in the project whether that be in the clearance work or maintaining the route and we are hoping to engage further once charitable status has been obtained. In the mean time we will continue to update via social media and through our website https://slrgreenway.org/ so please feel free to contact us at [email protected]
This is a project for the community being carried out by community so please support and help keep this beautiful route open and free of litter.
More to come!

The New Year has seen the SLR Greenway group complete a clearance through dense brambles to provide a clear opening of this section from Scrapsgate Road to along side Power Station Road of the original Sheppey Light Railway route. This section once formed part of the route between Sheerness East Station and East Minster-on-Sea Station.

The next step will be to level the path and remove the bramble roots from it. Further work to clear rubbish from this section along with planting of wildflowers along the verges of the entire route are also planned.

Once the groups charitable status has been confirmed we will be looking to raise funds to continue the route across Sheppey paying homage as much as is possible to the railway that we once had. We are aware that this aspiration and its completion will only ever be realised with the continued support and hard work from everyone here on Sheppey. Having a safe and natural route across Sheppey for everyone but most importantly our children will be a legacy we could all enjoy and be proud of.

This recent section cleared still requires some work to complete so we have left barriers at each end but we are planning to complete the work soon.

An AGM sometime in the near future is being organised for anyone who would like to come along and find out more or join us.
