Helping to resolve difficulties between parents and their teenage children is a key focus of our work.

Adolescence can be a challenging time and many young people find it hard to express their feelings and needs. Tensions developing between teenagers and their parents is a normal part of growing up. Blended families can also create tensions, not only between stepparents and teenage children but also between stepsiblings of different ages and backgrounds.

Mediation helps to rebuild relationships between adults and teenagers, so they can live together more harmoniously. With the cost of living meaning many young people need to live with their parents well into adulthood, nipping problems in the bud early really is worthwhile!

Mediation can also prevent homelessness by helping young people to stay in the family home rather than leaving home to escape the conflict or being thrown out by their parents.

We are pleased to be able to offer parent-teen mediation free of charge to all residents of the Sevenoaks District, the Borough of Tonbridge and Malling and the Borough of Tunbridge Wells. If you’re experiencing difficulties living under the same roof as a teenager, get in touch to see if we can help.

With schools out for summer and little rain in the forecast across West Kent, many kids will be spending time out in the garden in the coming weeks. Some of those kids will be lucky enough not only to have access to a garden but also to have a trampoline to play on.

Any trampoline owner who has neighbours living close to their boundary should be mindful of their neighbours’ right to enjoy a peaceful existence in their homes and gardens. Most people don’t resent children having fun outside and will happily put up with reasonable amounts of shrieking and bouncing noises. However, if those noises carry on day in, day out for hours on end and they can’t get a moment’s peace, understandably, people’s patience can be tried. Think about the position of the trampoline in relation to the boundary and consider limiting the hours your children play on it. Sometimes, lubricating the springs can go a long way to reducing the noise.

If noise from a neighbour’s home or garden is disturbing you, we suggest putting a polite note through their door in the first instance if you don’t know them or a gentle knock on their door and a respectful conversation if you do know them. Focus on the impact the noise if having on your household in the first instance rather than making any demands. If the situation doesn’t improve, consider mediation to prevent matters escalating.

We were delighted to hear from Kent Community Foundation that we have been awarded a generous grant by The Lawson Endowment for Kent, which provides support for local charities and grassroots community groups that address real needs and inspire meaningful social action across Kent and Medway.

We are pleased that the panel reviewing applications recognised that the mediation service we provide is addressing real needs within the West Kent communities we serve. We are heavily dependent on grant funding to keep the service going and this grant represents a significant contribution to our annual income.

Heartfelt thanks to all concerned!

On Thursday, we had the opportunity to celebrate 30 years of West Kent Mediation with the Trustees, Volunteer Mediators and Staff who attended our Annual General Meeting at Sevenoaks Indoor Bowls Centre. Despite the red weather warning, most of those who’d said they would come braved the heat and took part in the AGM as well as the best practice sharing session for our volunteers afterwards.

The AGM was the last for our outgoing Chairman, Richard Seymour KC, who joined the Board six years ago and has led the charity for the past two years. He was praised for his leadership and warmly thanked by newly elected Chairman, Patrick Hart.

The image shows CEO, Amanda Bell, with incoming Chairman, Patrick Hart, holding our (very delicious!) 30th anniversary celebration cake.

We were very grateful to receive an email last week from the Clerk of Crockenhill Parish Council confirming our application for a grant had been successful. The funding we receive from town and parish councils in the Sevenoaks District makes an important contribution to our annual finances helping us to continue to offer the service free of charge to residents across the district.

We'd like to encourage residents of Crockenhill who find themselves in a dispute to get in touch with us to see if we can help. Our impartial and confidential service is available to you all and can help you resolve your dispute before matters escalate and relationships potentially break down beyond the point of no return.

This week is Volunteers' Week and we'd like to take the opportunity to show our appreciation to everyone who has donated their time to West Kent Mediation over the thirty years since the charity was established. As a volunteer-led charity, we couldn't exist without our loyal band of volunteers who work incredibly hard to resolve conflict in the local community within West Kent.

To the many hundreds of mediators who have volunteered with us over the years, a heartfelt thank you for everything you've done! 🙏

We'd like to thank the Clerk and Members of Riverhead Parish Council for providing ongoing support for West Kent Mediation in these tough times. We very much appreciate donors who don’t wait for us to ask for a donation!

We would like to remind residents of Riverhead that our free of charge mediation service is available to you all. Please get in touch with us if you are in dispute with someone to find out if we can help you find a resolution.

We're currently receiving a lot of referrals and need two mediators for most of our cases. We'd love to hear from any trained mediators in Riverhead who could spare a few hours a month to volunteer for our community mediation service!

Each year, many people invest in civil and commercial mediation training, but few courses can offer real-world experience beyond role play and case studies.

If you’re a trained mediator living in West Kent and can spare a few hours a month to help us, we’d love to hear from you. Our mediators work in pairs for home visits and joint meetings, and new volunteers are always paired with more experienced mediators so they can build confidence by co-mediating before leading a case.

If you’re looking to build experience while helping resolve conflict in the local community, email [email protected] and we’ll send you an application form.

We’re fundraising in Tesco!

If you live in the Sevenoaks area and shop at the Tesco Riverhead Superstore, please help us raise funds to train children to be mediators by putting your blue tokens in the West Kent Mediation box. We’ll be in the store as part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts community grants programme until the end of July, so there’s plenty of time to show your support!

We’re raising funds to provide peer mediation training in local schools in Riverhead and the surrounding area. This scheme involves us going into primary schools to train Year 5 and 6 pupils how to resolve conflict calmly and effectively. The communication and listening skills the children learn are important skills for life and the feedback we receive from staff and pupils is excellent.

The way the scheme works is that the project with the most votes receives £1500, the project that comes second receives £1000 and the project with the fewest votes receives £500. Coming first would enable us to provide peer mediation training in three schools in the local area, so if you shop in Tesco Riverhead, please help yourself to a blue token at the checkout and vote for us! 🙏
